What percentage of americans are born as a result of incest?  


 I know it is quite high but my colleague believes it is 17% and I think it is only 11% 

Can any experts help us to resolve the answer?

     According to a recent study, approximately twenty percent of college  age women have been approached sexually by a family member. Figuring  conservatively that only about ten percent of that number actually go  ahead and do it, that makes one percent of the general population, or  three million women in the USA will have incest during their lifetime.  This fits well with the statistic of one million incest victims reports,  since only one third of any sex crimes are ever reported or revealed.  Since incest is usually not a single event but happens over and over  again, sometimes for years, the likelihood that they will become  pregnant through incest is high - without birth control something like  90 percent of women who have sex on a regular basis become pregnant  within two years. So, leaving out the incest couples who stop early or  practice birth control -  If they have the average number of children,  say two and a half per woman, that brings the total up over 5 million  incest children in the USA, or slightly more than one and a half  percent. So, you were closer, but still way off.

                   Possibly, 17% of the population has experienced at least a one-time  incident of incest and maybe as many as 11% may practice it regularly.  With modern birth control, it is likely that these 11% will not have  unwanted babies. It has been reported in some studies that about 1 in 10  babies are not parented by the assumed father. A recent statistic  states 40% of births are to unwed mothers, many over the age of 20. How  much easier would it be for these women to be impregnated by a brother  or father, than by a random afair or a sperm bank?  
  

My guess is that less than 1 in 20 or <5% of births are the result of incest but that is still millions in the USA. These kids are probably just as healthy, intelligent, etc. as the general population if the same good traits are evident in the incestuous parents
