I really don’t understand this sign or unless people really do drive tanks in the UK.

We used to have a similar “tank crossing” sign back in Rawalpindi (by the 502 workshop).

I’ve seen tanks crossing from there too. Its a tanks factory on one side of the road and a park on the other side. They take the tanks for test runs in the park and in order to do that, they gotta cross the road

So, I’m guessing that this one might be on the same lines.

We use lots of public contryside for military tank exercises. There are also signs for low flying helicopters and aeroplanes...
