Do people celebrate birthdays in Pakistan?

When I lived in Pakistan, only upper class parents would have parties for their young children - it didn’t seem to be much of a thing for grown-ups. I mean, sometimes rich people might use a birthday as an excuse to have a dinner party or go to a restaurant, but it wasn’t like it is in the West. What about now?

Re: Do people celebrate birthdays in Pakistan?

It depends, if someones a party person he/she does celebrate birthdays and if they aren't they won't...I know a lot of people who celebrate their birthday lavishly i.e. who are in their mid/late 20's to mid/late 30's...It all depends on personal preference.

It's pretty much a children only thing in the UK too.

Adults only really throw a party (going to the local pub for a drink or two with mates) if it's a decade birthday (20, 30, 40, 50 etc.).

Sometimes people will get an aftershave or earrings from their partner but that's about it.

None of my white friends celebrate their birthdays anymore.

I think brown-sahibs (the types who wear a tuxedo to McDonalds lol hahaha) in Pakistan are more western than white people, burger-families will celebrate birthdays and cut cakes even when they're like 43 simply because it's done in the west..

Re: Do people celebrate birthdays in Pakistan?

^ People wear tux at Mcdonalds..? man i have missed the scene back home big time..

Re: Do people celebrate birthdays in Pakistan?

Yes the burger types, they make me laugh..

McDonalds is like a posh resteraunt is to us in the west, lol.

They have improved slightly in the past decade thanks to TV and media.

Beyond saalgirah mubaarak, what are some traditional Urdu blessings people say to wish someone a happy birthday?

Re: Do people celebrate birthdays in Pakistan?

^ Huh? who says saalgirah mubarak now a days? its a wanna be burger zamana these days..its happy bUrday or happy baarday now...

Wow! i never saw anyone wearing Tuxedos there...its probably the ones from paaposh area or similar areas...thank god no one i knew ever did that...and nor did i ever see such a nazara, i did see a lot of girls dressed up for a special occasions though and no they weren't supposed to go or come just from a party they were there just to eat and dressed like that for chacha Ronald only.

See? I'm so out of it!

Re: Do people celebrate birthdays in Pakistan?

well since we're on it, why do people celebrate bdays anyway?

ok i know am off-topic

Re: Do people celebrate birthdays in Pakistan?

^ Well from what i have heard these days from my friends/cousins and acquaintances who're in Pakistan they say that people just party because they have nothing better to do these days...at the time of depression, people have lost it - the people who can afford and were wise enough to get visas/ passports can easily go holidaying and all to stay sane but the people who can't just don't know what to do so everyone is just going the excessive partying way because they think that way they'll be of the cool lot and it will look as if they have a life (which they obviously don't!) - Either a lot of people have gone the religious way because of the stress/tension surrounding them or they have gone the totally opposite way - and birthday is just another occasion an excuse for them to party and get drunk/doped and prove it to the world that they aren't terrorists and that they can party and have fun and what not...I don't think that it has more to it then that.

Let me see. To mark one's growth or measure one's life's accomplishments. To acknowledge the passing of time. To be grateful for another measure of time (I mean, for another year as opposed to another day). To feel special or make someone else feel special. To have an excuse to be Queen (or King) for a Day. To have an excuse to eat cake. To remember your Mama.

Re: Do people celebrate birthdays in Pakistan?

^ Thats not the case in Pakistan lol..

Re: Do people celebrate birthdays in Pakistan?

whats celebrating birthdays got to do with not being religious?

Re: Do people celebrate birthdays in Pakistan?

Because i have heard the religious people say that one partying is bad and two whats there to be happy about when you've lost one more year of life...

Re: Do people celebrate birthdays in Pakistan?

I think its mostly.a kids thing here too. I never celebrate mine but always celebrate the kids' birthdays.
Most people I know just go out to dinner or something with their partner or friends etc to celebrate!
And I've never seen anyone wear a tux at McDonalds
