Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

I have been highly impressed watching the American political process, where candidates from both parties are going to every state to win votes in order to be their party’s nominee in the Presidential election in November.

Do Pakistan political parties have a similar electoral process to choose their parties nominees for Premier? Or what kind of leadership elections do the parties hold?

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

We have a president who hand picks the parliament to serve his needs, not Pakistan's.

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

Lex, in US they need to come up with 2-4 candidates per party at most during "primaries" and 1 candidate emerges out of that internal competition, while in Pakistani system they first have to (s)elect parliament (100s of seats hence hundreds of candidates) so they possibly can't follow the trend/system there.

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

:rotfl: You are talking about a country where so called democratic parties have life-long chairperson, or leaders elected through ‘WILLS’.

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

^ Including Pirjee Kallan's badmash party. Right?

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

In collaboration with badmash illegal President of Pakistan…I was amused to read Cowasjee’s recent coloumn in Dawn…just sharing with the forum..

http://dawn.com/weekly/cowas/cowas.htm

On May 12 last year in the streets of Karachi, 50 citizens lay dead, 234 were injured, 110 vehicles were burnt, four properties destroyed and the offices of an independent TV channel was attacked. The Sindh High Court constituted a seven-member bench to hear the case. They met and deliberated for almost six months. On Nov 3, President Gen Pervez Musharraf struck. The judges who did not take the fresh oath under the imposed emergency were dismissed. Five of the seven took the oath and two new judges who had been appointed joined them on the reconstituted bench. A judgment was delivered on Feb 4. Inter alia, it stated: “Thus in our view this is not a fit case where the Court should extend interference…” End of story.

President General Musharraf, how low can your government sink? The dead will one day be heard.

“Thus in our view this is not a fit case where the Court should extend interference...”

Musharraf at his best, so long as his kursi is safe rest doesnt matter.

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

Excellent news for Pakistan. :k:

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

So are you saying that the death of these people does not matter so long as Mush is in power.

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

Daleel bhai. All deaths, including incitement to violence should be condemned.

It is a shame GS is encouraging people to incite violence. There are people asking for death to certain leaders, and saying violence should take place in Pakistan if their chosen party does not win the election. Not to mention some members making comments about destruction of non-Muslim leaders and nations because they are fighting against terrorism emanating from Muslim countries.

One begins to wonder if these are GS's official views as these kind of inciting comments are not being stopped?

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

I asked about your views, why are you saying that no investigation of the may incident is excellent news.

As for GS ask the management.

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

No. What this does is give an opportunity for a new bench to be set up, and reinvestigate the case. People that incited or carried out the violence should be brought to justice.

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

Really? How hypocritical, when the judgement was trashed on people’s death you call it excellent news and then go on to say excellent for Pakistan? Shame on you.

No one is encouraging anyone. People come here to express their views, too bad if you don’t like them.

How moronic. People have their own views, this is not Musharraf controlled media where Gupshup Officials will ban people not agreeing to their views. If you don’t like it then you are very welcome to leave

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

A few parties do, the major ones have coronations, PML-Q, PML-N, PPP, I don't think the MQM has veen those? Musharraf appointed himself President so the less said the better about him. Smaller parties have had elections in the past, ANP, JI and a few others.

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

Someone recently told me that JI does hold elections, don't know when was last election held. According to that person the shura of JI continues to elect Qazi Hussein even though he doesn't want to do it. Then it means the shura is blinded more than the Qazi :D

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

Aalsi, your response to post # 5?

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

Yes. All political political parties and political personalities that do not encourage democracy in their own parties cannot ask from democracy for the nation. They should first bring democracy in their own parties.

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

^ Including Altaf's party.

Re: Do Pakistan political parties hold primary elections?

Ok I understand that, but surely there is some sort of election process withing parties to elect their leaders?

We have that in Australia, Canada and other democracies whereby party members elect their party leaders, who are then in effect the choice for premier.

How are the leaders of the major political parties in chosen?
