Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “None should say that I am better than Yunus bin Matta.”
[Sahih Al-Bukhaari Hadith No. 3416]
وقال النووي - رحمه الله تعالى - فيما قاله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - في شان يونس أنه - صلى الله عليه وسلم - قال هذا زاجرا عن أن يتخيل أحد من الجاهلين شيئا من حط مرتبة يونس - صلى الله عليه وسلم - من أجل ما في القرآن من قصته ، قال العلماء : وما جرى ليونس - صلى الله عليه وسلم - لم يحطه من درجة النبوة مثقال ذرة ، وخصص يونس بالذكر لما ذكرناه من ذكره في القرآن بما ذكر ، وأما قوله - صلى الله عليه وسلم : ما ينبغي لعبد أن يقول أنا خير من يونس ، فالضمير قيل : يعود إلى النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم ، وقيل : يعود إلى القائل ، أي لا يقول ذلك بعض الجاهلين من ص: 1125 ] المجتهدين في عبادة أو غير ذلك من الفضائل ، فإنه لو بلغ من الفضائل ما بلغ ، لم يبلغ درجة النبوة
Al-Nawawi said: He (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said this to prevent ignorant people from lowering the status of Yoonus (peace be upon him) because of the incident regarding him which is present in the Qur’aan.
The scholars have said that what took place with Yoonus does not lower his rank in Prophet hood the weight of a Dharra.
And Yoonus has been distinguished with remembrance when we remember him - namely his remembrance in the Qur’aan - by means of that with which he has been mentioned.
And as for his (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) saying: It is not fitting for a slave to say I am better than Yoonus, then some scholars have said that the pronoun I is returning to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and others have said that it is returning to the person who speaks this phrase meaning that those ignorant people who strive in worship or other virtuous acts should not consider themselves to be better than Yoonus, for indeed even if a person reaches a level in piety that he reaches, the person can never reach the level of Prophet hood.
