Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

Like serving sushi at a wedding? Or Mediterranean food?

Is it against protocol or something? Would you be happy with that kind of food as a guest?

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

Where is the wedding...US or Pakistan...??
If it is in the USA I wont mind a bit the non desi menu...
If it is in Pakistan, and I am attending that wedding,it means I have traveled from US to Pakistan.. and I want nothing less than the typical shadi ka khana...yummm the daig ki biryani and that korma and roghni naan and not to forget the gajar halwa in winter weddings..!!

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

to a desi wedding the one thing i realllllllly look forward to is delicious biriyani and qorma so I like the mughali type khana at these occasions.

However if I was to plan my own I would probably do non desi desserts rather than halwa and kheer, just for a different twist on things.

My cousin had oriental food served at her wedding in karachi - indochinese style everyone loved that, but im not a fan of chinese food!

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

Even if you are serving non traditional food at least serve a couple of traditional items.
I was at a wedding in US where they served Iranian food it was a complete disaster. Tons of food got wasted.

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

the problem here is, up until i remember the last wedding asian food was ok but now hotels will not allow outside catering.....so for alot of gatherings we have or parties in hotels we are subjected to horrible salmon, and potatoes and all the terrible bland food....which is their menu

however, i think for weddings if we tell them our circumstances they will let us privide halal food, and hotel kitchens can be used....

personally i look forward to a bit of kebab and biryani, so i wouldnt be very keen on serving anything other than traditional food..... :) plus alot of my guest will be Irish and they definitely want to try asian food....so i'll probably get a less spicy version for them.....

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

Sushi is not going to work for sure as Sushi is an acquired taste. Mediterranean is going to rock. Simply put, food needs to be familiar in terms of look and taste. If its not, do not serve it in big gatherings like wedding receptions.

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

It might work Chinese, Greek or Mediterranean food might work , steak is a great idea too. Instead of chicken roast one can have steaks and mash potatoes with some dishes. But even for big events one dish doesn't work you have to order lot of things like Italian food like lasagna might work. It just depends on menu and people. But the thing is all this food should be halaal in muslim wedding

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

Absolutely UZ ^ would never serve anything anyone would have an issue with!

US...

Yeah, you're right. It is an acquired taste.

So it seems like for weddings, people prefer to stay with the familiar? Mediterranean food is great...would love to have it.

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

I had traditional desi khana at my shaadi..which went along with my wish of keeping things traditional.

For walima we wanted the opposite and modern ... and had this roasted chicken that had some kind of tasty glaze over it, served with roasted peppers, .. and fried rice

For them most part - everyone liked our menu choices... at one event it was buffet style with desi food.. for the other event it was a sit down with "American" food. .... Best of both worlds.

But i would say that even tho for the most part everyone liked how we switched things up, there were still haters in the crowd who wished they were being served desi food even at the walima.

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

I went to a desi wedding and they had non-desi food, everyone was extremely dissatisfied...

I went to another wedding recently, one one side they had desi food on the other side they had chinese food... two set of buffets to choose from...

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

No I wouldn't do that, unless its a really really private event. I know each guest so well personally and know they'd completely happy with the choice of cuisine I'm going for. Don't want my guests staying hungry and eating with dissatisfaction. Better safe than sorry.

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

If the oldies are set in their ways and don't generally have other types of food then you'll just have to deal with a lot of complaining later so it's just easier not to. If someone really wants other types of food then fusion food is always yum, or two different menus?

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

depends on the crowd. we had a chef doing a bbq at our wedding with steak, mashed potatoes, yorkshire puddings, etc. and the one salan type dish which was italian that we served with naan in case people wanted that, and it was a huuuuggge hit BUT we also had a fairly small wedding and knew all of our guests would enjoy it because we knew everyone coming! there were no aaltoo faltoo people hanging around.

generally speaking, i think the main thing is the food should be good. the problem with going with outside cuisine is most often its just subpar and tastes mediocre so people don't enjoy it whereas its harder to go wrong with biryani and raita. so if you are going non-desi, reha, i'd say to make especially sure the food is really good and your crowd will enjoy it.

as for sushi, man, am i invited to that wedding? :) love sushi! but like TLK said, its an acquired taste... you could always do a different kind of fish dish though, if you really want seafood.

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

***Sushi would not work at a desi wedding even if the wedding is in US. People already eat non-desi food so they might be drooling for a desi menu. But it really does depend about the crowd as SGC said.

Maybe we should make a list of non desi dishes that can work at desi weddings as a GS project. ***

Re: Do non-traditional menus work for desi weddings?

hahahaa:D well it’s what ur used to I guess. Most Pakistani’s find Iranian cuisine bland cuz they dont us red chillies & masala and thats what we consider “good food”.
I would have eaten up all the jujay and kubideh kebabs & everything else that went to waste :(.Love their food.

Not a fan of “methai” walay deserts though. The deserts should be non traditional.

Btw : at my cuzs wedding in Dubai , the food that was extra was packaged and distributed to the poor , i think thats great cuz so much of the food is excess sometimes .
