or is it like difficult for them too?? Like shakespeare english is for people nowadays??

They can understand Quranic Arabic as much as modern day English street punks understand Shakespeare or we Urdu speaking people understand Ghalib.

They "think" they can understand it.

They can understand Quranic Arabic as much as modern day English street punks understand Shakespeare or we Urdu speaking people understand Ghalib.
I hope you meant that 'Yes, they can understand Quranic Arabic' because that's the only answer. As long as you can understand Arabic, you can understand the Quran. The level of complexity is higher than colloquial Arabic but the interesting thing about the language is if you are a speaker or a listener, you will know what it means.

I have asked my Arabic friends that question and they have said yes they understand it. I would be skeptical in saying that they understand it as well as a scholar who has studied the Quran though.

From what I've seen, they'll understand it though someone who only understands Quranic Arabic would might have a hard time understanding their Arabic.

Arabs are very proud of the fact that the Qur'an is in Arabic and will not admit not knowing what the Qur'an means fully some will tell though ... However there are a few tests that will prove whether they really do know it or they are not admitting to themselves that really there is much they need to learn which is different to the spoken form.
I'll bring some good examples typical to test the ability of a native Arab at understanding the Qur'an they are verses from the Qur'an and NomiCA you can try these on them.

Ofcourse, I doubt they understand it fully and comprehend the various different meanings of each word. I think they can still understand the overall message. Just like most of us can read Shakespeare's plays and understand the over all meaning but can not quite comprehend the depth of it as much as a person who studies it.

I was just curious about understanding the language part.......not the techinicality of fiqh and interpretations of the words in the light of hadith n stuff like that.....

With a proper dictionary you can understand just about anything. After all its human language.

Ask them to differentiate between atwali and mustaqeem ... they will often find it difficult to tell you the haraqah of words in some sentences, because in spoken Arabic haraka is omitted - 'irab is the more correct term, which is the haraka of the last letter.

That's the best analogy, only about 40% of the Quran is easily read, infact many Arabs can't even read standared arabic.

I suppose I refer to Arabs in Arab countries. They are quite involved in reading and memorizing the Quran although that too is fading away. Overseas quite a few of them aren't really that involved in understanding religion. At least from my interactions and I have a crapload of Arab friends, associates and acquaintances.
