Why do Indians hate Freida Pinto?

If I were to stop an average person on the street in most countries outside India and ask whether he or she has heard of Amitabh Bachchan or Shah Rukh Khan, the answer is likely to be no. Indians, fueled by their shrill media, will no doubt take umbrage at this, but that’s a hard fact of life. Our stars are not as important abroad as we think, barring a few pockets where Indian cinema is popular.
**
India’s most popular acting export today is 26-year-old Freida Pinto, like it or not.**
**
WHAT HOLLYWOOD CRITICS SAY:**

The quintessentially Mumbai working class girl had a relatively quiet start to her career, modeling for a couple of years and hosting the English language international travel show “Full Circle” on Zee International. Then, destiny had its say when Danny Boyle cast her as Latika in “Slumdog Millionaire.”

The film was reviled in India, feted abroad, won a clutch of Oscars and grossed the small matter of US$378 million. It is arguably Pinto who has best capitalized on the film’s success.

She quietly found herself a Hollywood agent, schooled herself in the ways of the West and went on to sign a slew of films with an impressive array of directing talent including the legendary Woody Allen (“You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger”); the acclaimed Julian Schnabel (“Miral”); and the veteran Jean-Jacques Annaud (“Black Gold”). Possibly her most challenging role was for “Miral,” in which she played the central character. “Miral herself is played very engagingly by Freida Pinto as a mischievous and idealistic teenager with an acute sense of natural justice,” wrote Critic Geoffrey McNab in The Independent. However, most critics can’t get past Pinto’s beauty.

Reviewing “Miral” for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Deborah Young described Pinto as “distractingly attractive.”

“Freida Pinto’s Caroline the pri*matologist is no Dian Fossey, and indeed gives no hints that she has even heard of her, but, man, is she gorgeous,” said the venerable Roger Ebert, critiquing “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” in the Chicago Sun-Times.

WHAT INDIANS THINK:

In India, reviewers tend to be dismissive of Pinto. Rashid Irani’s review of “Apes” in the Hindustan Times does not mention Pinto at all, nor is her name in the credits. Nikhat Kazmi in the Times of India and Sukanya Verma in Rediff damn her with faint praise.

“Freida Pinto stays mostly in the background but does have a piquant charm of her own,” offers Kazmi, while Verma describes the actress as “no more than a pretty distraction.”

The average Indian’s mentality seems to concur with that of the reviewers.

Your average, opinionated Atul, steeped in the delights of Bollywood, tends to think poorly of her acting skills, as my conversations with punters indicate.
This opinion seems to exist in the Indian film industry as well. “India will never accept Freida Pinto unless she proves herself in Bollywood,” a filmmaker acquaintance told me recently. In an industry known for broad interpretations of roles and shameless mugging in the name of acting, that’s rich indeed.

CRAB MENTALITY:

The truth is that the general audience outside India thinks of Pinto as an exotic and beautiful import and as a pleasant addition to their screens.
Abroad, critics are generally accepting of her and are certainly not as harsh on her as they have been on India’s import-that-never-was – former Miss World and Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan – for her less-than-impressive turn in “The Pink Panther 2.” Indeed, Mike Goodridge of Screen International said that Rai Bachchan was “all at sea” in the film.

Perhaps the poor perception of Pinto in India could be due to subliminal jealousy, arising out of watching the girl-next-door make good, and the proverbial crab mentality.

When A.R. Rahman won a brace of Oscars, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for “Slumdog Millionaire,” India, while quick to accept the accept the accolades, did so with a caveat that his scores for Indian films were far superior. With Pinto there is no such acceptance, as she hasn’t won any major award, yet.

In 2009, Pinto scored a BAFTA nomination for best supporting actress for “Slumdog Millionaire.”

As a voting member of the academy, I cast my vote for her, not because she is Indian like me but because I believed that she is the gentle and calm soul of an otherwise frenetic film. She didn’t win.

Detractors will get an opportunity to see Pinto “prove herself” in her upcoming film “Trishna,” directed by the celebrated British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom. The film, alas, though shot entirely in India with a largely Indian cast and crew is based on Thomas Hardy’s novel “Tess of the d’Urbervilles,” and will not be the actress’ get out of jail free card. That will have to be a proper Indian film.

Right now Pinto is part of another global success story as “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” grosses north of US$256 million and counting, while she takes a week off to spend with her family in Mumbai.

She has said some ‘controversial’ stuff about India.. True or not, going by a lot of the comments it seems ppl are genuinely offended by things like this:

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

i never heard of her before i saw slumdog....and even after that i only saw her in couple of mag shoots...didnot see her name being mentioned in hollywood at all. the reason she is not that popular is because she doesnot have that star spark, she aint pretty and her role in slumdog was just normal...could have been played by any other actress.

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

she's pretty, blesso. and no, she doesn't overact like the usual bolly-bimbettes. and is spot on regarding the indian skin color obsession.

as for do indians hate her, no one knows her or her views to hate her.

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

^ to me she is very average looking...as for acting she needs to prove it yet....overall she comes out pretty below average when compared to any other bolly actress....haan rakhi se behter hai....as for skin colour thats a long debate. jis ko jo skin colour pasand ho wo woh karale. loag aiwein pagal ho jaate hain.

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

I think she's attractive. Got nice face structure.

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

dude can you name one bollywood movie where the actress had to use her acting skills instead of her butt-thumkas? lets start with your favorite "actress" aishwarya rai - she herself has been spreading rumors that she's about to be cast in hollywood movies from the last 10 years. frieda pinto's gotten there in a year, working with people like woody allen. and you say she is below par for bollywood?

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

yes i can name loads but you wont agree with me. since they are not your choice as everyone has their own choice.

lol i never heard any of those rumours about aish....pichle das saal main 2 holly movies tou kar chuki hai lol... personally i dont care if she doesn or doesnot act in hollywood...if she does good otherwise fine...her previous hollywood films didnot really impress me thus not really interested....holly isnot great great to be a part of anyway.

frieda with allen? hmmm hearing this from you for the first time. good for her.

yup i still say she is below average for bollywood.

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

pal did you read the original post? check kro. it says right there. also that she is gorgeous. :D

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

behshak likha hoga..maine orig post nahi parhi poori not bothered.

wahan likha hua tou bas sirf is liye tumhe gorgeous lag rahi hai lol....agar likha hota "not gorgeous" tou kya na lagti? :D

u find her pretty fine your choice.

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

Chi chi chi. What fazool arguments you both are having when there are far more pressing issues. Such as how the mating of two medicore actors increases the chances of an offspring with similar talents.

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

acha

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

not many people know her let alone hate her

I think she is really pretty but her acting was terrible in Planet of the Apes.

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

Only saw her in slumdog millionaire. I did like her acting. It was good to see a fresh face. I do believe the Bollywood establishment is a tad bit jealous of her. Did not read the post - but from the thread I gather she stated Bollywod is obsessed with skin color - have to agree.

As for examples of some good Bollywood actresses-

Smita Patil, Shaban Azmi, Konkana Sen Sharma, Sharmila Tagore (in some movies), Rakhee, Rekha, and yes Aishwarya (Raincoat), Nandita Das are some that come to mind.

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

Its all very anti climax for the Indians. The all so exotic looking blue eyed, tall, fair skinned pageant Queen Aishwereya Rai was supposed to rule Hollywood and give actresses like Angelina, Julianne Moore etc run for their money but here comes a very generic/typical Indian looking girl who has no interest in Bollywood yet she's potentially going to make it big in Hollywood (although I have my doubts). In essence her 'Indian' tag is no benefit to the Bollywood industry, bollywood can't cash her and they don't like that. Thats how I see it.

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

i like her coz she is not a fake like ashwariya etc.

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

umm..i couldn’t care less to be honest :halo:

most of these bollywood actresses and hollywood actresses are quite fake in terms of their on-screen attitude as well as their appearances (from cosmetic surgeries to botoxed faces)

as for Freida Pinto yes this girl got there right in the midst of Hollywood within a year but she yet has to produce a film to show her spectacular acting. We know that she hardly had a role in rise of planet of the apes.

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

I don't she's gonna make it big in hollywood in terms her acting alone, so far she's only so popular as an individual because of her red carpet and style and glamour (and the current day Hollywood is so full of them kinds), all this single handily kept her in the limelight despite not having any spectacular display of acting in Slumdog Millionaire. In terms of presentation and playing sweet, this is where Aishwerya Rai failed big time and Frieda succeed...even though they both aren't great actress but the media and the public perception about them is so different.

Re: Do Indians really hate Freida Pinto??

Agree..

She has a v.pretty smile as well..
