After the discussion in another thread at wedding forum, here is a guide on how to make an outfit from scratch. Please feel free to add your input/ideas
1-get a print-out,preferable enlarged one of the dress’s picture
2-ask your tailor how much fabric he wants for making the dress since most of them are panelled/tailed styles now a days
3-buy the fabric for the dress, lining, dupatta, bottoms, borders for finishings/pipings
4- go to a fabric shop (silk or lining wali) or a threads shop (the ones that have the reshmi karhaii walay dhaagay) and get the swatches/threads for reference for the dyer
5- drop them at the dyer for dyeing
6- drop the dyed fabric to the tailor for marking/stitching panels
7- meanwhile have another trip for selecting borders/motifs for the embroidery/embellishments and discuss the price/time frame needed to make it.
8- keep reminding tailor for marking/panel kharay karnay kay liay sigh
9- drop it with the karigar you finalised prices, etc
10- wait wait wait !!!
11- pick it from the karigar and drop with the tailor to get it stitched

Re: DIY-making a formal/semiformal dress from scratch
Seriously after lukin through that list, I'd rather just get my dress made from one of you lovely ladies. I don't think I'd have the paitence to go through all that myself. lol.
And I must say any commission you HB designers make is well deserved, considering all d efforts you put through. So well done! :)
Re: DIY-making a formal/semiformal dress from scratch
have done it many times but usually there is also
11- get from karigar (emb wala) and cry over how he messed it up.
12 - take it back to karigar to fix it if is fixable or get the money back from him as he hasnt followed the design or get it done again for same price.
13 - wait wait wait
14 - get from karigar sigh and drop at darzi.
15 - wait again.
16 - pick it from darzi with finger crossed
but if you have reliable darzi and karigar then no problem ..... which I do (after many trials) but i am not in pakistan :( hence ............ thankful for all the GS designers.
Re: DIY-making a formal/semiformal dress from scratch
Looks like Alhumdulillah I'm a lucky one, my Kaam or embroidery never went wrong. Couple of times my tailor did a blunder but that's too he had fixed it, my tailor is way too good Alhumdulillah. I once did an experiment with my JJ lawn suit that I wanted to add broche panels to it and get embroided. My tailor did the panel thing and then embroidery came out fanstastic. But yes it's one of the task however to be done, as I was in Pakistan I used to do such things and experiments frequently but now depend upon my mom n sisters and belle :). Miss the shopping thing of Pakistan a lot. Trust me Pakistan is heaven to do clothes shopping
