Airlines are a cyclical business always expanding and downsizing, you may want to look into what the Airline Industry goes through and what impact it has on their employees!
I have been in an Industry where they decided to downsize......so they offered incentives to older employees to leave that way they could keep the younger workers......difficult decisions both for employees and Management.

Certain management consultants feels that downsizing is just an excuse to show high profits and hide their incompetancy to make business efficient.
I do believe in above theory, as this is the case most of the time, Downsizing not only suggests that management has not taken proper steps while hiring people but they have miserably failed to sustain the growth and find new area of development in the business.
Above is one aspect, other way of looking into is, it sometime gives employee a good package but the still the worst part is, employee deserving big packages are normally the one who should be kept in the company... Golden-Hand Shakes is the best way to lose Golden employees...
There were many layoffs in US within last year especially in auto insdustry (Ford, GM, etc). You can get lots of information on internet if you need. As I remember Ford fired more than 30000 and GM fired more than 40000 employees. I was one of the victum of Ford cost cuttting.
