So many of us use these electricals. Do you take any extra steps to clean the machines once in a while or do you totally depend on the washing tablets to do the cleaning job ?
I know a few people who actually use dishwasher cleaner every month , where they run an empty machine with a bottle of dishwasher liquid so it gets all clean inside. I have done it a few times, I dont know if I saw a difference.

It is like trying to wash a bar of soap to keep it clean.
I fail to understand why would washing machine and dishwasher do not stay clean every time you use them.
There can be a time when you can see some visible signs that they are not working efficiently then it is time to fix the root cause not the symptoms.

I think its more to do with taking the grease off and left out food bits in the drains of the machine .. similarly the roughage from clothes and soap residue from the washing machine drains

Those cannot be taken care of by just washing cycle. The underlying cause has to be taken care of first then do a empty washing cycle.

I was wondering the same thing the other day. My glasses now come out of the dishwasher with a funny smell. I was thinking that I need to run a cycle without dishes and use some cleaning agent.

Saima, now that you mention it , I realized I experienced the same with my cups and glasses too. But after doing the cleaning cycle with a dishwasher agent, that smell disappeared .. .

This works for us well. After every 3-4 months we use this to clean any hard-water buildup and smell

everyone is right in this thread..
you do have to address the underlying issue in dishwashers the catch has a filter which traps food pieces, ..they disintegrate but if there are many they can block, and that can create smell, and poor cleaning performance in general. so that has to be addressed…
some places also have issues with build up due to hard water…thats a diff issue..bigger problem with that is less of a drain but if there is buildup in the spray arms then cleaning performance goes way down, so you have to take the arms out and use cld or vinegar immersion…or just get a water softener, but then it has environmental impact.
the machine cleaners are not the same composition as dish cleaners, they are heavy duty and some actually advise you to run the machine on the full hygiene cycle after running them.
now for washing machine..front load ones have to be aired out or you can get mold in the gasket..important to leave the door open when not in use and occasionally clean the gasket too..
the machine cleaner or clean cycle on super hot will be helpful if you have nasties growing in there due to dampness.
