What are some good and open source software available to create discussion forums ? Like GS runs on vBulletin after customization . I want something similar for my school .

I've used SMF and phpBB in the past. Good experiences. InvisionBoard is pretty good as well.
I would say vBulletin, very solid and feature rich. I have about 10 licenses but their recent price and license changes are not so good.

Yea vBulletin is not free

SMF with the integeration of moodle if you want to setup some discussion and course material stuff.
