Something I learnt today whilst revising = Snakes e.g. pythons dont develop limbs although they do have leg limb buds whilst an embryo, however dont express apical ectopic ridge (aer) and the bud doesnt develop into legs! Whilst other animals express aer (or genes associated with it) and develop there limb buds.
So AER and Fibroblast Growth Factors (FGF) are what cause your limbs to grow, both legas and arm signals are the similar.
