How should parents dicipline their children? Is spanking/punisments/grounding etc good ways to discipline?

Spanking. .....a big NO
Grounding............. sometimes
punishment............ if they do something big.
if you want to discipline them organize everything in your life and they will learn it.:)

Re: discipline?

start early. As young as 18 months of age, a child understands what "no" means. They may not LIKE "no" but they understand it. By age 2, time-outs work well in most cases. The general rule is one minute per year of age - a 2 year old sits quietly in a corner for 2minutes, a 3 year old for 3 minutes etc. Stick to it, set a timer and above all, BE CONSISTENT. When you say "no", MEAN it and make sure you dont "let it go this time" because thats really confusing for a kid and if you give them an eighth of an inch, they'll take 10 miles lol. If they resist time-out or make noise, start the timer over. If this doesnt work, go for removal of privelege (ie., a trip to the playground) or no playing with a favorite toy or game for a certain period of time. The best and most effective strategy though is consistency.

Time outs. They totally understand, just like Mamaof3 said. I started giving my son time outs about 2 months ago, at 18 months.
