Disappointed in today's youth

Every person (if they had a normal teen) was easily distracted and thought no end of themselves.. everyone at their times had diff distractions.. doesn't make our youth any diff from the one's that have passed..

The oldie's also were glued to radio's..listening to music and commentry and various programs..then it was tv..

Re: Disappointed in today's youth

^At least they could read, write and talk.

Re: Disappointed in today's youth

Technology/tools have enabled unprecedented access to information & the convenience offered by them presents us with lesser challenge to exercise our mental/intellectual capabilities .
But at the same time technology will obsolete many of the job roles present today therefore Survivability in the future would demand far greater level of creativity, innovation & lateral thinking then is required today. Hence if the phenomenon that is being discussed is indeed true , its definitely not because of technology.., if anything technology is a force working against this direction.

I beg to differ.. some still don't know to read, write OR talk! Kids and youth these days is atleast street-smart.. and they do know how to talk and read..

Re: Disappointed in today's youth

njgal - thanks for opening such an intellectual thread. It was a good read.

Times change and so do needs. I took a Victorian Fic. class and almost died reading 900 page novels - it was torturous for me to read those works - they were written for people whose only source of entertainment was reading - not for us in the 21st century. The professor said each year he has to cut off some readings as students can't read as they used to be able to. It's important that our educators and employers understand and identify generational changes and make amendments for us - they can't expect us to be how they were, the world has significantly changed in the last 10 years alone. Having the same expectations from fast-paced kids today as previous generations is unfair.

njgal, I have a 20 year old cousin who has just been accepted in med-school, speaking the same way. He can't seem to hold online conversations, he is always distracted and resorts to the best shortcut he can find to complete assignments, readings, etc. That's people nowadays.

READ? TALK?
:):):):):):):)

Read.. talk and moreover they can SPELL better than the seniors! The seniors that claim to be "educated" still can't hold a conversation..and when they do, it's all about them and their experiences..which can bore any sane person! Atleast the youth of today can speak on diverse topics and keep the listener engrossed!

From all I could gather from all the replies I've read. The considerably "older" generation claim to be better than today's "Illiterate" generation. Issues were raised on how the youth of today can't "talk", they talk using "mono syllables" they listen to IPODS, Google whatever they want etc etc.

I beg to differ but that was then, and this is now. There is an amalgamation of all sorts of people in every generation. Some are poised, sophisticated, learned (apparently) and some are rebels, defy authority. Now the question here is. Who is right and who is wrong.

It's just the angle you look at it from. If I were to be Sire tv actor here. I'd rather go and lock myself in a casket and never come out. If being "old" is about showing off how many beers you drank or how many people you hugged. Then I regret to state. I Would not want to be like them.

As for "read write and talk" Well so can we =)

So I don't think this debate on how older generations are better both morally and ethically is valid. It's subjective and I think very open-ended.

Re: Disappointed in today's youth

^You remind me of a poster called "Jaanwar".

Where is the proof that we are as good as the previous generations at reading, writing and holding conversations?

You got it all wrong!

IMO the "YOUNGER" generation is far more in grip of what is to take place tomorrow--then the generation of past which could never ever have imagined the things taking place today.

Having said that, I thought that the only weak point in today's generation, possibly, could be thick-headedness and sticking to their point...irrespective of how wrong or misplaced or irrelevant it may be. Once anything written and said or referred by them...will tend to be declared (NAUO'ZIBILLAH) an AYAT that all boundaries will be crossed to protect however silly hogwash has been said or written by them!

I have my fullest faith in the youth...repeat youth and not someone in disguise of youth..not someone 40+ and posing as a young generation of today!

The YOUNG generation of today will never profess sick mentality and would always forge ahead towards anything which seems laudible to them. They are blessed with certain GOD given gifts of having a better and far more endearing proximity with the world--thanks to the I.T and the the wonders of science which the past generation was deprived of.

We must also remember that there are both risks *involved ... concurrently! the success of the evil and the rise of the good..! and somewhat the more gullible appears the latter!*

Peace...

Re: Disappointed in today's youth

Yeap.. blame the women. it's all their fault. :@:

I agree - I guess I am set in my ways.

You know there are studies that indicate that reading a book and listening to book (audio) triggers different parts of your brain.

Did you also see the new school that Bill gates opened and all the classes are project based. (much like a corporate environment). No text books. Classes are geared toward strategy and out of box thinking.

He even said - maybe teachers won’t exist in 10 years.

At Philly ‘Future’ School, Books Are So 20th Century : NPR

Face to face communication is already dwindling. I would like to see other types of communication (texting, phone) have as effective results

That sounds like a proper dumbing down idea. Have you seen this movie?

Re: Disappointed in today's youth

and who gave them these little dumb making tools? the forefathers, didn't they?

Re: Disappointed in today's youth

Im sure the youth of today are pretty disappointed in the adults of today who should know better.

Its a vicious cycle this life of ours...enjoy!

Re: Disappointed in today's youth

Yeah, blame forefathers for everything.

Hareem, as it is sunny outside, I shall give you a hug.

^LOL!

The forefathers have limited knowledge..most of it is all about them.. no one's interested.. The older generation is also using google, yahoo, facebook..and gs.. so why complain and blame the youth?

The way today's youth thinks, the oldies won't ever be able to understand..they're too engrossed in their bubbles and themselves and their experiences.. however, there are certain exceptions people such as Anwar Maqsood.. a treasure of usefull infomation and fabulous conversation skills. Moin Akhtar..Zia Mohayuddin.. Usman Peerzada.. great people don't talk about themselves..they talk abt great people and on great subjects. Mediocre people talk abt themselves.

Re: Disappointed in today's youth

sure be disappointed because thats the most any adult can do.

no one bother to see their action because if you see closely, our actions are highly dependable on the surrounding we are living in.

  1. Parents...they dont give time to their children. instead of showing them different alternatives and help them to get to some path they either restrict them to follow certain path or make them totally abandon everything.

  2. teacher....recently i was discussing this with my sister and we both come to the conclusion that none of our teacher is like the ones we see in movies. where they tell their students about their strengths and weakness. i never come across any teacher like

  3. friends and acquaintances....constant debate of who is better in terms of status, education money, updated with the current affairs/gadgets.

Re: Disappointed in today’s youth

hey hey heyyyy, I don’t give one worded answers :snooty: So speak for yourself :barbie:
