I’ve always maintained that politics is a dirty game. There are many instances when even an honest and God-fearing leader would have to bend and make alliances where, under different circumstances, he/she may choose otherwise.
I’d like to know what you think.
Do you agree or disagree that the term “honest politician” is a paradox?
What makes for “dirty politics”?
What indiscretions would/wouldn’t you tolerate?
Given that most Pakistanis take such huge pride, rightly or wrongly, in their faith, honesty and fair-play should be the first things they ought to expect from their leaders, and the PRIMARY basis for their votes because their religion emphasizes these two qualities in leaders massively. So yes, even if the term "honest politician" is an oxymoron, it ought to exist in the "Islamic" republic of Pakistan.
Sadly, where it should matter, Islam takes a back seat. It's only used against women, celebrities and minorities, and in general to control and exert influence over the population.
honest politician is not a paradox. plenty of honest men and women with integrity in our politics. people like Aitzaz Ahsan, Raza Rabbani, Sherry Rehman, Ayaz Amir, Pervez Rashid, Ishaq Dar, Sartaj Aziz, etc are all honest politicians who have provided great service to the country for a long time in one role or another. PM Gilani is also a gentleman.
all politics is dirty and all politicians are corrupt - is propaganda that has been done by the power hungry army generals who want to make this country one big golf course for the armywallas to play on. why don't they talk about the corruption within the army? why don't the papers highlight their corruption? they latch on to the corruption stories of a politician whether true or not. mercifully some of the fabricated stories planted by yellow journalists are starting to get exposed thanks to the very few honest anchors on TV.
