What do the different fiqh say regarding the direction of Qibla? Or how the direction of Qibla is determined when not in close proximity of Kaba?
Which way do the moques in USA face? East? South East? North East??
Just curious. Please don’t fight.

Re: Direction of Qibla
2:146] The people of the Book know this as they know their own sons; but some of them conceal the truth which they themselves know.
Hmm let's also ask the People of the Book.. apparently they also know 'Qibla' like their own kids!
Re: Direction of Qibla
ahmadjee, mosques in north america (atleast in ontario, canada for sure) face North East. The reason has to do with the eliptical shape of earth..
i would still like if someone can put light from fiqh perspective.
Re: Direction of Qibla
Ansoon, thats what I am trying to find out, if all the fiqh consider the shortest distance to be direction of qibla.
Re: Direction of Qibla
ok here is a quick script that i have created using google maps that will give you the shortest distance between two lat/long .. notice how South East is found to be the closest distance when we calc using lat/long but since earth is tilted on its axis and using a flat map produces errors..
still i would like to know why north-east.. i am looking for same information as you are
here is the link: LINK
Re: Direction of Qibla
Shortest Distance on the surface of the Earth as well as lying on the one plane normal to the surface and passing through the center of Earth.
This plane is defined by three points. the first point being the the Holy Kaaba, second point being the center of the Earth’s Sphere and the the third point is the place where you are at, like New York or Tronto.
There is one point on the Earths surface diametrically opposite the Holy Kaaba, if one stood there in a ship, since this point is in the Pacific Ocean, any direction one faces will be the correct direction to the Holy Kaaba.
***Of course with GPS, all this is made easy, anywhere on the Earths surface or if you are in an airplane, you turn on the GPS and input the cordinates of the Holy Kaaba, it will tell you what direction to face for the Qibla…

Re: Direction of Qibla
do what ur heart tells u is right....
according to hadith around 30 degrees+/- error in determining the direction of qibla is acceptable....
just make sure your niyyat is right, and inshaallah it will eb accepted....
Re: Direction of Qibla
If I am not mistaken, the Hanafi fiqh goes for the shortest distance. But what about Malaki, Shafi and Hanbali? And what about Shia i.e. Fiqh Jafaria beliefs on this?
