can ya tell me the pros and cons of dish vs cable, and then which is a better dish service provider. I have been thinking of going witha dish but always back off due to potential isues of recpetion during bad weather.
How do rain, snow and overcast skies affect your reception, those who have switched from digital cable to dish please note your experiences and vice versa.
I can't tell you about the weather effects but if you have a dish you can get Pakistan Prime & other Desi channels which you can't subscribe through cable. That was the deciding factor for many Desis in my area.
In my experience dish is a lot better and works out cheaper. The only time the weather affects reception is when there is a thunderstorm which is not very often. In the UK obviously Sky is best. Not sure where you are based so can't say. If you are in the UK then go with Sky as cable providers like NTL & Telewest are extremely poor and therefore provide a very very poor service.
Khattana, I am in the US.
ahamedjee I have been thinking about dish because it gives me all the footie mathces in europe which I cant get otherwise, plus having the pakistan Tv option is good to get when my folks are here. I am just concerned about reception quality during snow stroms and thunderstorms, chicago has matched the thunderstroms record from 1935 this year and then snow is always unpredictable.
So choice of programming wise I am def leaning towards dish, but the reception issues are still unclear .
hey fraudia...i'd say dish all the way...it gets really bad here as well in the winter and maybe once or twice all yr we lost the connection for a lil while but that really won't happen..plus right now you can get basic top 50 channels on two rooms for only $30...get a second dish and you can have desi channels..so u can get prime for 15 and if you want sony and zee tv the package is for 25...so u will be paying 75 if you go with three desi channels and top 50
if you want to buy soccer matches..it will probably cost you like 15 bucks a match..and if you tell them that sheraz referred you then i will get $5 off my bill for 12 months lol
so the reception quality in general is good 99% of the time? if thats the case I may just go for dish. now the question is dish network or direct TV :)

Fraudia, I dont think dishnetwork gives you any problems in winters... Remember, I live very close to Chicago (also next to the lakes) and we have harsh winters here too, but we dont loose signal in winters, even though there is a big tree infront of our dish. And I didnt get it installed professionally, installed it myself and its working fine. And yes, Dishnetworks programming is unmatched!!!
come on buddy..what have u been smoking :)
there is no comparison between dishnetwork and directv...directv doesnt give u desi channels...plus dish network is cheaper...i told u its only $25 a month for top 50 channels...$5 for each additional receiver
can't beat that buddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

I have never looked into the two so had no idea, but this way I get info from experts like yourself rather than moi having to do all the research myself.
Fraudia, I got dish in Chicago and the only time I was unable to get reception was during the snowstorm of Jan 98 when it snowed 20 plus inches overnight. My dish got covered with snow. I had some golf balls in my garrage. I started throwing those at the dish. I was able to hit 8 out of 10 and it did the magic. Snow fell off and I started getting reception. Usually, the dish is installed at a vertical and snow accumulation should not happen. I think Dish beats digital cable hands down. UNLESS you are a big NFL fan. Only DIRECTV has the NFL ticket where you get to see all the games. But if you prefer College Football, then you are in luck with Dish. They broadcast many popular games on their Game Day package.

Well, if its a really really bad thunderstorm, I sometimes loose signal on the international satellite, which points at 61.5. However, another thing you need to keep in mind is that dish is coming up with some new type of dish pretty soon, with a different shape and three LNBs tied to it, and they are planning to increase their channels. If thats going to available soon, you might as well get that one.
Signed up for Dish, getting it installed this week. told Comcast to take a hike. at the same time decided to get DSL and told comcast broadband to take a hike too.
