I’ll be the first to admit I don’t care who prepares my food, so long as it does not contain haraam ingredients, I will eat anywhere - neither the chef nor the server needs to be Muslim or ehl-e-kitaab IMO.
As for what other dishes they prepare, I also don’t question whether they grilled pork on the grill before they make my food. If I’m going to a deli, I might ask them to cut my sandwich with another knife because I’ve seen the knife being used for haraam ingredients, but otherwise, I don’t make a fuss.
I remember at my sister’s wedding, we hired a caterer that made fantastic food, but the chef was not Muslim (though the ingredients were guranteed halal). My parents were freaking out about feeding food made by non-Muslims to the religious elders (imam reading the nikkah) or super-observant Muslim guests.
Do you take care to see who is preparing your food or what else they’ve prepared before your dish - or no worries?
I dont think that there is any Islamic restriction about non-Muslim cooks. Here in USA, Muslims who really want to stay away from any non-halal ingredient often eat at pure vegetarian Indian restaurants owned by hindus.
i went to non-muslim restaurants most of the times but i always stick with fish, chicken and everything between them.
nope i don't care what they are frying or grilling before, it doesn't matter in my Islam.. and yes i take one or two glass of wine too some times, can't resist.. they go well with certain foods.. like Chardonnay Blanc with chicken related dishes. ..etc..
Well in that case we can’t really eat anything if we live in non-muslim countries coz even the fruits n stuff are packaged by non-muslims And the tea n coffee and bread…
varies for diff people.
haram ingredients
being cooked in same oil
sharing utensils with pork, even if the utensil was washed between uses
being prepared on same grill
it varies
i know someone who will not even keep her food in her office fridge because people have ham and sausage etc there and her view is that it gets on her food
some guy does not like to use the same microwave someone has heated pork in, right then, not sure how many minutes is the required buffer, I did not really ask.
to each their own I guess, I am cool as long as I can do what I like.
Here is the height of piety.
I was listening to this Muslim scholar who was telling about a Muslim sufi’s madarsa in Lahore. The Sufi told his students. I made wudu before tilling the land in which I sowed the seeds for this meal you are about to eat. I made wudu before harvesting the crop. My wife made wudu before grinding the wheat and she made wudu before cooking the meal you are about to eat.
The least you can do is make wudu before eating it.
Beat that if you can.
I really didn't know the cook has to be muslim. Where does it say that in our religion?
(waits ages for a real answer...)
If you're Sunni, I don't think its an issue. Shia dietary law technically does forbid foods prepared by non-Muslims, though in my experience only the most strictly orthodox people follow this.
Nope never cared for who's preparing the food as long as they prepare it well. I'll ask for a knife change if I see them using it with other meats, and I don't get omelete made in the same pan if I know the guy before me had bacon in his. Omelete stations usually use the same pans for everyone. I also don't care about the fries from McDonalds and all, even though I need to research that a bit more.
I really dont care if the cook is Muslim or not but we avoid going to places serving pork. Just the thought of my steak getting grilled next to pork ribs almost makes me vomit.
God forbid we will not die if we eat veggies and fruits in case there is no halal restaurant around.

not just shia's, quite a few sunni sects have same restrictions actually. Wether they are followed, enforced or acknowledged is another thing i suppose.

Pirsahib,
I suspect this is a hangover from our Hindu past. The Arabs seem to be more chilled out about these things.
