Dining out and tipping.

When you’re dining out, if the service wasn’t horrible, do you leave a tip along with the bill?

Does it matter if the service was great vs just ok?

Do you tip more if you’re with more than 1 person/ family?

Is there a certain amount/ percent you normally tip?

How do you feel about a gratuity fee being included in the bill?

Re: Dining out and tipping.

i tip 5-15% depending on the service received… including the gratuity in the bill will defeat the purpose of tipping…the servers will not provide a good service.

Dining out and tipping.

I always tip unless the service was horrendously inexcusable. Our tax rate is 8.25% here, so I just double the tax and round up to the nearest dollar.

Easy calculation.

We tip anywhere between 15% - 25% depending on how good the service was. Even if its horrible service we still tip.

That being said, I do however never hesitate to point out a bad server to the Manager/Owner if I ever come across one.

If there is a gratuity charge then until unless we have more than ten people in the party, we usually skip the tip.

I don’t mind paying gratuity as long as I know before hand.

Also for buffets we tip one dollar per person.

What about including gratuity would prevent the server from providing “good” service?
Them serving you food/ drinks/ refils when you need it isn’t cosidered “good service”?

Re: Dining out and tipping.

I tip between 15% and 20%-ish. 15% is the minimum tip regardless of service, while 20% and up if the service was really, really good. I often dine out with my family (lots of kids) and if the restaurant staff puts up with them with a smile, they deserve a little extra.

I won’t add on top of an already charged gratuity unless the service was sensational, and then between 5-10%.

Same! So what happens if there’s a surprise gratuity charge?

Oooh! Interesting idea! I like ittt!

Re: Dining out and tipping.

I’ve never known a restaurant to not tell you about the included gratuity before hand. Usually if you have a party of anywhere from 6 or more, they will include the gratuity in the bill. Your server will tell you when he seats you or when you make reservations or even on the menu.

Re: Dining out and tipping.

I usually tip between 10% or 15%

My tip is minimum of 10%. I usually don’t tip when I am carrying out, but always leave the tip when dining in. Of course that is when someone is serving us at the table, unlike McDonald’s or subways

Re: Dining out and tipping.

Sometimes they don’t , they think its understandable.

Re: Dining out and tipping.

When you’re dining out, if the service wasn’t horrible, do you leave a tip along with the bill? Yes

Does it matter if the service was great vs just ok? **Everyone gets a tip…really horrible service gets less and exceptional service gets more **

Do you tip more if you’re with more than 1 person/ family? **I t****ip based on the price of the meal…so usually if I’m paying for more than 1 person, I take account of whatever the collective ‘meal price’ was and base the amount of my tip that way **

Is there a certain amount/ percent you normally tip? **I use Khatti’s trick and double the tax (8.75%-ish) **

How do you feel about a gratuity fee being included in the bill? Gratuity fee is expected to be** added on when there are more than 6 or 8 people that being said I’ve never been told about it beforehand by the waiter (it is written on some menus). I don’t mind…less calculating for me! **

Re: Dining out and tipping.

There usually isn’t. Restaurants with the gratuity policy almost always have it written on the menu/counter/hostess station.

There was only one incident where at a small town restaurant, the owner added 18% “gratuity” to our bill & the service was extremely sub par. We let it pass but after showing our disapproval & wowing to never dine there again. I also posted a bad review for them online :halo:

Re: Dining out and tipping.

as a general rule i tip 15%, if the service is extraordinary than i may tip more. there have been very few instances where i didnt tip at all because of poor customer service.

there has been one instance where the server didnt mention that gratuity was to be added to the bill, this was a persian restaurant, the service was average and dessert that i ordered, Faloodeh, didnt look or taste anything like advertized. i paid the bill with gratuity added and needless to say i have not been to this restaurant again.
