DILIP KUMAR (YOUSUF KHAN)

DILIP KUMAR;

Little known facts about Indo-Pakistan’s Best Known Actor;

  1. DILIP KUMAR has acted in a total of 60 films plus 3 guest appearances and four uncredited appearances in 54 years (1944-1998) He has never acted in more than 2 to 3 films in a year – hitting the peak at the very begining with 5 films in 1948. His most productive phase was between 1948 and 1961 when he acted in as many as 31 releases. Between 1964 and 1976 he worked in only 14 films. As a character actor between 1981 and 1998 has just 14 releases.

  2. DILIP KUMAR has played a Muslim character only once in his entire character: when he comes disguised as Khan Saheb in KOHINOOR.

  3. He has never got the National Award (of India) for best actor though he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Lifetime Achievment in 1995.

  6. DILIP KUMAR never formed a romantic pair with Nutan in their younger days but starred opposite her in two later films (Karma and Kanoon Apna Apna). He has also played opposite Rekha in his last two films (QILA and AAG KA DARYA)

  7. DILIP KUMAR has acted opposite both his contemporaries at least once: with Raj Kapoor (in ANDAZ) and Dev Anand (in INSANIYAT). He has acted twice with Raj Kumar: once in PAIGHAM and then in SAUDAGAR (1991). Ditto with Sanjeev Kumar: Sunghursh and later Vidhaata.

  8. He has acted in nine films with Pran.

WUTHERING HEIGHTS & DILIP KUMAR !

Famous Producer-Director A.R.Kardar actually wanted to make a biographical film on Omar Khayyam and he even gave Dilip Kumar a signing amount of Rs. 200k for it. However, after several rounds made to Dilip Kumar's Pali Hill house the star convinced him to drop the idea of making a film on Omar Khayyam and come up with something "more intimate like like ANDAZ". Obviously the star wanted to play 'safe' role. Kardar had a leather-bound script based on the Emily Bronte novel Wuthering Heights--but was not sure whether to hand it over because Dilip had already played the Heathcliff role twice before; AARZOO & HULCHUL.

**Heathcliff is a character who seems to have fascinated Dilip Kumar for, apart from playing it straight in three films, he has used shades of the character in several other films (AADMI). Heathcliff is a man of the edge: spiteful, mad, insecure and thirsting for revenge. **

Dilip Kumar added the dimension of the tormented lover who has inhabitants of WUTHERING HEIGHTS. This was to remove the essential negativism of the role and attract audience sympathy by giving the character a justification --- so essential for the hero of an Urdu film. Dilip,however, says that he did not "insist on the remakes, they just happened".

In truth, however, Dilip has always preferred to play the hero with a touch of negativism: recall BABUL, DEEDAR, SHIKAST, DEVDAS and, the notable of them all, AMAR. In each of his early films, Dilip's character toys with his female protagonists, leading them along, making them think that he cares for them when he actually does not, thus leading them to tragedy: BELA (Nargis) in BABUL. Champa (Nimmi) in DEEDAR, Nimmi again in AMAR and Chandramukhi (Vyjayanthimala) in DEVDAS. He was caught in an image trap but did not realise it till it was too late. Much later he confessed, "One gets caught, one is trapped, one doesn't get out till the audience doesn't like it anymore. There's repetition, there are gimmicks....the persona becomes a cult by itself."

yeh cheez

He was not muslim in the role...! he was born to JAUDA BAI..a hindu rajput.

  1. DILIP is someone we know..have seen...and not a pseudonym!
  2. Abhi ye thread bohat chalay gi..aur Saira Bano ke alava Madhubala bhi ayengi aur unn ke qissay muhabbat ke.
  3. My first cousin..a member parliament in India (CONGRESS-Sonya) is the gawah of Dilip-Saira wedding...hence I have spent a good amount on phone calls to him while researching on my favorite actor.....

Guess you must have watched a "different" version ..... THE Mughal Azam had him as Shezada Nooruddin Mohammad Saleem !!!!!! Rest we can shred this topic to pieces but that will not change the fact !!!!!!!

Re: DILIP KUMAR (YOUSUF KHAN)
