Dilemma....

I am considering buying one of the following mobiles:
Nokia 7210(with camera)
Nokia 7650
Nokia 6610(with camera)

All of them are nearly in the same price range here in dubai…but since I am going to toronto this summer for further education,my cuzins told me tht it would be alot cheaper if i were to get it from toronto itself…they have some PLAN thing.

Could someone tell me more abt this “PLAN”, the mobiles they offer, and their prices?

In North America, typically cellphones are sold by the cellphone carriers. So if you buy a phone alongwith a monthly plan (commitment of 1 or 2 years), they give a deep discount on the phone. Some cellphone companies might give u the phone for free if you agree to pay them the monthly charges (for usage) for 1 or 2 years.

If you break the contract, meaning you get the phone and then decide you don't want to pay the monthly charges, you gotta pay extra to get out of the contract. And to be on the safe side, the cellphone companies only offer these discounted phones if you have a good credit history in North America. Just so you don't have any ideas of taking the phone and leaving the country. :)

This is pretty much it.

Faisal bhai i dunno wht GS would do without ppl like u :)…Thank you very much for the info…my own cuzins didn’t explain it to me in tht much detail!

For the cherry on the cake is there any website I could check out for these cellphone carriers in toronto? :bummer:

As for the phones, dont get the ones with cameras in em. The photos suck! With the money you save you can buy urself a 1MP cam (hp has one for 149cdn). ** I think the phones u wrote arent even in Canada yet. **

As for plans, Faisal bhai is correct. I will give you a perspective from Toronto. We have 3 big timers here, ROGERS AT&T , BELL, and TELUS. FIDO also exists, but its going down big time.

Rogers is generally a rip off. They give you dirt cheap phones, but with expensive airtime.

Bell, is modest. They charge a bit for the phone, but the minutes are cheap.

Telus, is what I use. I find it has the best PAY-AS-YOU-GO plan..meaning you buy a card , no contract. Telus also charge alot for their phones, but their rate is pretty good.

If its NOKIA you want, go to NOKIA Canada , and select the phone you want from the DROP DOWN MENU to your right. Once you’re into the phone’s minipage scroll down to the bottom, and you’ll see which company has the phones.

Holy moly.. what the heck is this???

Rogers AT&T : Phones

BELL Mobility :Phones

Telus : Phones

Fido : Phones

Hskhan:I checked ou the nokia.ca website..and u are right none of the mobile sI want are listed there...why is tht?....these mobile have been out here in dubai since 4-6 months

hehehe..I was surprised as much as u were....bye bye privacy!

COOLDUDE Bhai, Canada is not very technologically advanced like Europe or America. Dubai on the otherhand has people willing to spend the money for cams on their phones. In Canada people would rather buy a plain cellphone and a new digicam seperately.

The carriers in Canada are not willing to pull out the dough for these new phones. They recently brought over Sony Ericsson’s phones with all those features like cams and stuff, but no one is buying. Maybe in a few years we’ll get em Nokia phones. But not anytime soon.

If you want a phone that’ll everyone will “wow” to. Get the Motorola V.60 or the Motorola V70. Both are the “in” thing nowadays. Unless you’re willing to spend a few thousand of dollars on a VERTU . You can get a Vertu from Rogers.

I don't believe anyone would want to spend US $19,450 on a cellphone, but then the world is full of _____ people. :~)

even USA is far behind in cell phone.. latest models can be found at Hall road Lahore than any place here in USA... Dubai is international market where as in USA companies try mass distribution to carriers.. and people here dont want to spend so much money at buying cell phones.. mostly people get free or pay a small amount along with the deal..

base is only 5k for stainless steel.

What a cheapster it will be :) Got a Vertu, but only got a base model!! Sheesh.

If someone is willing to go more than US$200 (which is about my limit, anyway) on a cellphone, and can afford a Virtu... he'd rather go all the way. I assume, it will be people like Arab princes or show-offs like Larry Elison, who'd tout such kinda phones.

Exactly Faisal bhai.....
Hskhan:No thanks,it would take approximately a gazillion yrs to pay for tht from my allowance! ;)
I was jsut wondering....if i bought a phone from Dubai would I be able to use it in Canada? is there some way?

Ive contacted the providers and i should get a response soon.

I personally think it wont work.

Phones in canada are sold from providers, not like in dubai where you buy a phone and get your own provider. Over here you get a phone from a provider, and you use their service.

OMG!...Hskhan thank u so much !!!

COOL DUDE, Here is a reply from FIDO(amazingly they got good customer support)

Thanx alot hskhan…so if i were to get a tri-band phone from dubai tht could be used in canada, right? just making sure :bummer:

Got a response from Bell. Their network wont support it. I only know about Fido. If i were you id contact FIDO by tele and confirm.

Can’t u/I just e-mail FIDO and ask them whether a tri- band phone would work or not?..
theoretically it should work…all I need is the service providers SIM card…
