Okay, I see. Thanks for the clarification, Braveheart. I had an Irish friend who was absolutely adamant about not being related to anything remotely British; I sort of stupidly assumed that the same might apply for Scottish folks.
And ofcourse, bottom line - we’re all absolutely the same in the end
Hey nothing stupid about it,your absolutly right and their all as bad as each other,it`s just that i was lucky enough not to have grown up with it,either that or im just an above average human being, lol.
whenever you meet them in street, or see them hanging around..
stare at them like as if you would eat them.
What happens when we're dead? The irony is that all our questions will be answered after we die. We spend our whole life trying to figure out the truth and the only way we'll find out what it is, is to get hit by a bus. And the only comfort that religion offers is that God is driving that bus.
All racists who are prepared to die for their contry, please do that now.
Tomasso, this may be a God given opportunity. Afghans on an individual basis are one of the friendliest and most hospitable people around; AND their cuisine is absolutely out of this world!! Most of North Indian cuisine is really derived from a mixture of turkish and Afghani cuisine. So Go Ahead and invite yourself to a few dinners. I have to travel miles to go get some Chappli Kababs around here!!

Nadia, must you put me a on a guilt trip? Women so easily illicit emotions out of guys. I was joking, no need to apologise dear. On top of this i am acting nice and stuff on a Culture thread. Now take back the apology right away. But leave the flowers, they nice.

I don't know which faction they belong to yet, but they aren't Hazara, Uzbeks, Greeks, Persians, Aimaks or Balochs, I think. That leaves Pakhtuns or Tajiks. <<
How do you know they are not one of those?
By the way Tajiks are supposed to be shorter and darker than Pashtuns.
Though I don't see what the big deal is about 'Fair' skin.
You really can't slot them. I have seen several people from Herat and Kabul settled around Washington D.C. Some of them can pass off as Westerners and some of them as North Indians.
Anyways they have a great reputation for being Hospitable, so you can try them!!!
My hunches, backed by research, are more often than not correct. How can I not eventually get into history, politics or religion in a respectful manner? That is the whole point for me. The problem is I am more the introvert and pakhtuns are more gung-ho. This suedo-intellectual must muster the courage combined with some backround to make contact.
aw Tomasso, even if you are an introvert, I am certain you'll get along with them fine.
How to stay away from politics and religion? Relatively simple: ask questions about their children, how old are they, which schools/grade, what do the kids do during the day; how do you find the weather?; if you are sitting in a living room pick on some object (like a painting or something) and comment on it (sounds mundane, but better than nothing); if you are at their place and they have offered you some food, inquire about the recipe - whose is it? family recipe? ingredients? similarities with anything you have tasted previously; suggest both of you switch recipes, etc etc. This is all mundane stuff, but maybe as time progresses there can be more 'substantial' conversations.
If, independently, they bring up religion, politics or history then well and good - indicates they feel comfortable discussing it. If not, then try not to push it (in my opinion).
Have any of the other neighbors in the community visited them as of yet?
There is a bit of a problem with the fact that they live next door to a family that I believe are Jewish, but not overtly. On the other side of them people have built a substancial fence. Americans do that to other Americans, so... The Afgans fly an American flag outside. It is dicey, somewhat.
most of the afghans living in the west feel proud to be americans or europeans. so no worries about getting beaten up for talkin to the mans wife. and yeah some gift would be nice, but be ready to get something back in return. we always like to give back....
