Dilemma..... formal dress for an evening event

I have to go to an evening event with my husband, for his work… the card says its a formal event… black suit for guys and formal wear for women, strictly dresses only.

I’m in a dilemma now … I don’t wear short dresses, I would prefer full-length (I’m not comfy with knee-length dresses) and I don’t want sleeveless… oopar sai I’m preggo… so how do I find a dress that I look nice and elegant in, and which covers me properly too… I don’t want to look like a school-marm with all ladies dressed up to the nines … but I’m also not comfy showing skin… what to do :hinna:

P.S. Don’t say don’t go… its not an option.

how about something like this?

Re: Dilemma… formal dress for an evening event

I’m sure you can find a nice full length, empire line dress with which you can pair a dressy shrug.

I dunno what’s available where you live but it’s not a problem to find both both things in the UK.

These are by no means the best dresses (Monsoon had a lovely one last year that a number of people I know really liked) but I did a quick search to give you an idea.

I made this comment in an earlier thread based on my sister’s experience who has the same personal restrictions (floor-length and **with **sleeves), black-tie does not mean dresses only - you can wear a really nice pantsuit (but stay away from corporate business suits - that looks like you’re coming from the office). I feel like I cn speak with some expertise because I’m the one who always takes her shopping and I generally select her clothes for these events.

In her closet for black-tie events are the following items:

  1. Black wide-legged (straight) satin pants

looks sort of like this - but nicer:

  1. Black chiffon lined floor length skirt
  2. Black taffeta skirt (it has this really cute train)

- She blackberried the picture for my input - so the picture of the skirt isn’t very clear.

The bottoms are paired with silk or chiffon blouses and tops (black with silver sequins, turquoise chiffon, grey taffeta, hunter green jacket-style blouse), and depending on the weather, she adds a really nice wrap. I always pick out elegant accessories (shoes and jewelry) and voila, the outfit is complete!

Evening attire does not need to be a strapless/sleeveless dress or a cocktail length dress - there are many options that are modest, but look contemporary, elegant and appropriate for these functions.

Here is an example of a skirt (that is timeless and will allow you to get a lot of wear out of it):

For tops - a blouse that wears like a jacket such as these wil cover your tummy:

If you want a more streamlined/tailored look - here are some other options - but I think the A-line cut above is more appropriate since you’re expecting and will be more flattering on the pregnant belly:

My sister was pregnant when she bought the satin pants - she bought one size up and had it altered to her regular size after she finished having all of her babies.

My suggestions are based on the assumption that you are not too far along and are not very big in your pregancy - these may not work in the later stages of your pregnancy.

Good luck!

@Stoppit: Thanks, I love that… you helped a lot :hugz: since its titled a maxi dress, i googled empire waist maxis and found the correct term… “long cocktail dresses” and found plenty at “Lord and Taylor”… will go shoppign this weekend  Thanks you sooo much.

@Sehrysh: Actually they have written in the card… “ladies, formal dresses only”… its an annual celebration event or something and they have specified things in the invitation card, otherwise I could have worn a long skirt (have those) with a nice top. Thanks for the help though

Re: Dilemma..... formal dress for an evening event

Glad it helped :)

Would love to see what you buy too :D

Re: Dilemma..... formal dress for an evening event

It's so hard to find a decent wrap these days...and if you find one to have it match the dress is next to impossible!

So I went shopping last weekend and tried on tons of stuff, couldn’t find what I wanted. Some make me look fat or had cheap looking material or too deep a cleavage.

My husband loved a little black dress on me but it was just below the knee :frowning: and I just don’t want to wear that… wish it was made longer, it made me look so slim and totally hot :hinna:

I did a search online and so far this is the modest modest one I could find and its maternity too :D… what do you girls think? I could get a silk pashmina or a wrap and wear that with it.
