Dil walon ki Dilli

Re: Dil walon ki Dilli

What is the story behind transfer of Delhi's people to a new city probably during Khilji ruel and do there exist any Darwazas like in Lahore.

Re: Dil walon ki Dilli

It was muhammad bin tuglaq, Pagal Badshah, he changed his capital from Delhi to Devgiri.Daulatabad as it was near to deccan and was in Central India, now maharashtra but western border was too far then he had to return to dilli, he also started rubber coins but dilliwalahs started duplicating it:D

Lal quila has various gates, Ajmeri gate, Kashmiri gate, Lahore gate, I think there are twelve gates, Kashmiri gate has Inter state bus terminus hence for daily travellers, travelling towards north of delhi it is very important area

Re: Dil walon ki Dilli

I read in the novel, that during 1857 (Ghadar) Kashmiri gate was destroyed by British army. seems it was later re-constructed by British rulers.

Re: Dil walon ki Dilli

British destroyed it to enter during rebellion/Vidroh, it was stronghold of Mirza Mughal, in pre 1857 General Metcalf and entire british regiments were positioned to the south of Kashmiri Gate, in Civil Lines, the old remanants of civil lines now form many Delhi government's office, they reconstructed it with wooden gate. Urdu promotion board which is just inside the fort was build later.

apart from city what distinguish is attitude of Delhiwallah like discussing passionately while talking, we will keep talking while pakoras are dropping out of mouth:D

Re: Dil walon ki Dilli

What are the traditional dishes that delhiwalas still enjoy. I heard most of the dishes like Nihari, Haleem originated from Delhi.

Re: Dil walon ki Dilli

Tradtional dishes vary from one location to another, city is multi-ethnic and multi-lingusitic, Hindustani dishes like Sooji/Gajar ka halwa to punjabi dishes and afghan dishes of Lajpar nagar market. Delhiwallah's enjoy gol-gappas of thelawala to the exotic food of hotels. Haleem is tasty though I don't know if it started from delhi. Origin of Urdu and standard Hindi is attributed to Delhi.

Re: Dil walon ki Dilli

I live pretty close to delhi and visit it almost every week.
now the HIP part of delhi is taken over by its satellite towns noida and gurgaon (both of which happen to be in seperate states). i usually park my car in gurgaon mall (they have 60 malls on same street) and take metro/subway to get to delhi.
it is lot easier to move around in delhi due to its public transport system which is best in south asia.

delhi is changing every year. new bridges, new metros, new buildings , new malls and stadia every year changes its entire look.

best architectural building i found in delhi is akshardham temple. it is 8th wonder of the world.
it will take you over a week to just breifly see all the tourist spots in delhi. that too if you take metro which goes to every spot.

i dont like the people of delhi that much though. kolkata may be the worst metro in the subcontinent but has best people. delhi is just opposite.

Re: Dil walon ki Dilli

i m not generalizing but criminals and then famous road rage of delhi and deadly blue line buses are infamous things of delhi...........:(

Re: Dil walon ki Dilli

There was a time when thugs of a particular city were famous. probably Banaras… I’m confused

Re: Dil walon ki Dilli

Abhi delhi famous hai…:hehe:

Re: Dil walon ki Dilli

:emmy: Dilli wale ko ghussa mat dilao, warna :smilestar: hoga..

On a serious note, we as a Pakistani have a conception that Mumbai is probably more dangerous as they show in bollywood ‘Mumbai ka Don kon’

Re: Dil walon ki Dilli

It was true over a decade ago, but mumbai govt started an operation clean up ( Ab tak 56) style and all the dons now either are dead or ran away from the country.
mumbai is safer for females and they can walk home drunk even in late night.
delhi on the other hand get lot of foregniers and indians from exotic places which fall pray in the hands of people from UP, haranya jatts and other immigrant class people.

still i find delhi safe though. mostly if you dont act stupid you will be fine. but dont take panga in delhi. i never had any issues in delhi. may be delhi police is better hence more reporting of crimes.

Re: Dil walon ki Dilli

BTW delhi is getting greener more than before. especially after govt started doing landscaping at every intersaction and giving 5 star hotels contracts to maintain them.
i like delhi sprouts
