cognizant is a commonly used lay person word as well.
but think. if you really were a teendabbywala, and u were to go from door to door, to collect raddii and reuseable tins and cans, how would u dignify your work??

Sometimes if one were to get to know the people we work with on a bit more personal level than strictly business only attitude, that can help break the Ice.....and the other person begins to see your sincerety.....everything takes time!

dushwari, do ppl know what youa re doing? if not ou have to tell them, u have to promote yourself ..it does not mean to brag but to let others knwo what you do. If ppl cant appreciate it because they dont know, then its time to educatethem if they cant appreciate it even though they know,then they are a bunch of jackasses, and you should not let it bother you and you sould get out of that job as much as you can. In the end you work for yourself anyways..regardless of who the employer is. the latter types, either they are going to dig their own graves anyways, or you move on when u have what u need in terms of experience.

If you are working at a company which has any kind of performance appraisal system then this is discussed at that time.
Talk to your supervisor about how you can you and he/she promote the importance of what you do.
Try to come out as a hero at some occasions when there was a crisis and your contribution was part of the efforts to fend off that crisis.
Try to take charge at some occasions when nobody is willing to. Volunteer for some non job related chores once in while e.g. At my work they have a program where employees as trained as first responders for emergency situation and sign is posted at the top of cube of each first responder. That tells everybody who first responders are and also it gives you a kind of social status too. Once in a while bake a cake or cookies and bring to the office for everybody to share. Remember it is your work and your skills to be a fun team member which get you recognition. Just work most of the times does not cut it.

Create a crisis that you can solve and tell everyone that it is a crisis that's going to effect them. Then go ahead and solve it and come out looking like a hero :D

the thing is that work is so noble, because on that depends your livelihood and on that depends your prestige as well as what kind of clout you move along with and who looks up to you.
so, dignity at work place is one of the primary things that one looks for, at least one who holds it dear.
anyplace that is all about money and no morals, is a sad decay of work ethics.
and that must never be supported.
dignity at work is essential so that one can feel a sense of being a part of an org that values your contribution through all the hard work you do for that org.
work, above and beyond, becomes a mission. and when one is at one with the organizational mission of one's employer, then taking on petty challenges is inconcequential.
the person is tirelessly comitted up to a point.
exhaustion is not acceptable because then th work will suffer.
so how do you make your work place inviting and welcoming to you?

Well, I'm in IT so I'd rotate "crashed" servers, e.g. email, file servers etc. Those things happen regularly so its not a shock.
The thing is that if u are in this department (specially at the top) no one understands what you do or what your job entails, so its important to make ppl aware of ur importance.
