So I just received my new laptop and with it comes digital persona fully installed.
For those of you that dont know what it is …it’s basically a fingerprint logon system that enables you to swipe your finger to logon to your laptop, online accounts, and other password protected websites (such as paklinks etc.).
How safe is this? are there ways to break in? without cutting off a persons finger of course
Is it safer then typing in your password the old fashioned way?
So far I really like this fingerprint technology…it makes accessing your accounts a lot faster and easier. However I am hoping that it’s safer as well.
what are your thoughts and experiences with this type of technology?
Don't give the finger to your passwords just yet...
It really depends on what you're trying to do with the security... if it's just for logging into personal social networking sites etc., and convenience is more important, then fingerprints make sense... however, I wouldn't trust digital persona with corporate accounts.
What Digital Persona does is simply store your fingerprint information on your hard drive - often in unencrypted format, so if someone can get that information and which points need to match (e.g. through browser history), it's relatively easy to make fake matches.
I use fingerprint scans on a few websites, but for a windows login, I use a combo of password and fingerprint... and do the same for some other apps on the computer.
