If you cook your biryanies with different kind combination of aroma and taste spices, then every time you will get a new variety of it. And some the way it is cooked as well.

Once (a long while ago when I used to watch Masala Morning) I made a chicken tikka biryani which I thought was a nice twist. Other variations I've saved to try later are kofta biryani.

Hmmm, no wonder monk used to translate aankh macholi as eye m bra. Kids used to laugh thinking that he is calling himself a female undergarment.

There's so many biryanis you can do! If you know how to structure the basic biryani well, you can keep on changing the meats etc. There's Chickpeas Biryani. Chicken Tikka. Vegetables. Seafood Biryani. Kofta Biryani. On and on!

Yes you can add any type of meat or veg in your biryani that will not change the type of biryani you are making. The only difference comes from the different kind of masalas and the way how it is cooked.

Different kind of Masalas: Common things are chilly powder, turmeric, coriander powder, whole garam masala (clove, black pepper, cumin seeds, bay leaves). Now the difference will come from following combinations:

1.The commons with only cinnamon powder
2. The commons with mace, nutmeg, green cardamom
3. The commons with cinnamon powder, cinnamon sticks, star-aniseed and black cardamom.
4. The commons with green cardamom powder
5. The commons with all of them above

They ways it is cooked:

Hyderabadi biryani (marrinated)
Pulao biryani
They layered biryani

And also the green stuff like green chillies, green coriander, mint, also make a difference. Some poeple put sliced lemon and fresh tomatoes in the layer.

Biryani can be cooked without onion. It can be cooked with or without tomatoes.
