Different "raags" and the significance

I have always been interested in Indian classical music all my life. In my school days I was blessed with a good music teacher. But afsos un dino itni samajh nahi thee kay what were we being taught.

What I want to know is the siginificance of different types of raags. Rag Aiman, Raag Darbaari Raag Multani thodi. How were these deviced and how is it said these fews raags actually every type of music. I would be much obliged if someone could help me. And recomend any good websites if possible.

In Geeta Mehta’s book, The River Sutra, she writes about music in one chapter – the book is a must read and her description is just excellent, you should read it sometime
