Re: Difference between Muttah and One Night Stand?
Of course it has to do with Iraq and politics. You know why this is all an issue now? Some time ago, there was a story published in an American newspaper about how this practice, being a shia practice, was repressed by the Saddam Hussain government (a sunni gov't). It was reported that Shia men were now free to practice muta'a again, since it was outlawed under the Saddam government. Just another ploy to get shias and sunnis fighting again, and of course, muslims fall for it. This is a practice that was put to a close a LONG time ago, with just a few quacks left in the world who were still encouraging it. No one paid any attention to them. This issue was brought back into the limelight because of recent occurrences in Iraq. Next thing you know, everyone and their mom is blogging about it - people are pullig out documentation that lay buried for years in scholars' minds, to discuss a dead issue.
Re: Difference between Muttah and One Night Stand?
How can you equate FULL NIKKAH and the expected life long marriage with all the accountibilty and responsibilty with a temporary contract called MUTAH to have sex. I rest my case.
Peace nstar777
I was under the impression that Mutah was temporary only if the people getting married under it want to end, if not they may continue in that state. Please correct me if I am wrong. Do they have to divorce if their basis of nikkah was mutah?
Even if nikkah is an expected life long commitment which it is, does this stop people getting married for lust? I think not! Equally so, I don't think the basis for mutah is necessarily lust. Though I disagree with it.
Re: Difference between Muttah and One Night Stand?
And how many shias are doing it? You think its a vast majority? Most practicing Shias either don't have a clue as to what it is, or you wouldn't have all these curiosity threads on it. How many people are well versed on it? You know why? Because its not an Islamic practice! If a handful of wackos are doing it, doesn't make it legit, or worthy of discussion!
Re: Difference between Muttah and One Night Stand?
poic, I think if lesbianism was somehow at one point sanctioned by some point in Islamic history, you'd support it.
There is NO support for the practice. Even the accounts that Prophet Muhammed allowed for it at certain time points are dubious and his intentions aren't clear. Did he allow it in time of war? Was it a practice that he was trying to water out? Lots of theories. Fact of the matter is that its not recommended, encouraged, or supported in any way for a random guy who wants some play time. Sunnis don't practice it. Most shias have no clue what it is, although theoretically, its purported to be a shia practice. non-sunni, non-shia groups don't have it in their sermons.

^^
Maybe thats the case with you, but I knew of this Shia practice long before Iraq, nor I have read those stories in News.
Talk to any Irani, and they'll tell you that they look down at the practice...it's something poor people do, they will tell you. So it's not really socially acceptable, even though it's not illegal.
It was a topic of discussion recently because of the Iraq war, though...otherwise the only Sunnis who have heard of it are those who have a bone to pick with Shias...

Truth be told, I'd look at it in a different light...

I agree...but the point is, the practice in itself was probably a release...I've heard some suggest that women would even proposition men...I don't know if that implied it was being used as a cover for prostitution (which is not at all unrealistic, I admit), but that itself is just conjecture.
