What is the difference b/w snow tires and regular tires? And do the cars sold up north come with snow tires or regular?
Re: Difference b/w regular tires and snow tires?
Winter tires are good for ofcourse freezing temperature below -30C unlike Regular tires which freeze at that temperature and might cause skid of the car. However only drawback is that they wear off quickly in warm (+20C) weather, where as their counterparts regulars last longer in this condition.
Best but expensive solution is to buy Winter tires for Nov-Apr time and keep the regulars in your garage or storage place during that time. Replace them with Regulars for May-Oct time period and store winter tires then.
Re: Difference b/w regular tires and snow tires?
There are almost no tires that are regular anymore. Mostly tires come in two types. Snows and all-seasons. Snows have an aggressice tread and are made of a softer rubber so it doesn't become too hard in cold weather and lose traction. All season ar harder and are being foisted on us as good in winter too. They are not. After two years of use they are useless in winter.
Snows are coming nowadays in two varieties. One is Ice and other is snow. Ice tires are more suitable for urban use where there is a decent snow removal. Pure snows are more suitable in rural area. All good winter tires start at about 70 to 80 dollars per. Its better to have them mounted on a set of steel rims and never dismount them. This damages tires less due to mounting and dismounting every year. Also it costs less to to the tire changeover. Steel rims are better in winter than aluminum.
