Dieticians and Nutritionists....

What EXACTLY is metabolism?

Does the concept of fast and slow metabolism exist?

Why do some people eat LOADS and never get fat :teary1:

Re: Dieticians and Nutritionists…

You’re the Daaktarni, you tell us :cb:

Re: Dieticians and Nutritionists…

Doctors arent good at basic science :frowning:

I need someone like CDG to help me.

If doctors knew everything - dietcians, physios, pharmacists etc wouldn’t exist. Doctors are nothing without these other professions which is why its called a team :snooty:

CDG...help!!!!

Re: Dieticians and Nutritionists....

lol, guys I didn't take the metabolism course in the last year so my knowledge limited.

Metabolism is the sum of Catabolism (breaking down the food you eat into usable components for energy - this also uses energy) and Anabolism (using that energy to run the body systems).

Yes, there is such a thing as slow and fast metabolism. Resting Metabolic Rate is the energy required for the body to function at rest. So this is essentially what you need for body to function but if you add physical activity your body will need more energy. The more energy your body uses to stay functioning the more you can eat without storing it as fat. Therefore, exercise increases your metabolic rate.

If you eat very little to try to a starving diet your metabolic rate will DECREASE. This is the worst thing you can do. That's why I'm always telling everyone here don't stop eating just eat healthy. What happens when you eat too little and your body doesn't get enough energy to fulfil its needs at rest the body will react by decreasing the RMR. So essentially your body tries to cope by using less energy and saving more for crisis. When a person on a crash diet stops their crash diet and starts eating way more they gain weight. This is because your body had compensated and reduced its metabolic rate which takes time to come back up and in the mean time person gains weight.

I don't know why but yes some people have higher metabolic rate hence can eat way more and not get fat even though they don't exercise. I suppose that's genetic but the good news is with physical activity you can increase your metabolic rate.

I think I steered off a little but that's sort of what I can remember off the top of my head.

Pait ke keray?

Re: Dieticians and Nutritionists…

My metabolism used to be like this.. but not anymore..

I would literally eat junk food every single day and not put on weight.. I was a size 6 all thru my late teens and early twenties..

Things are so different now :teary1:

Re: Dieticians and Nutritionists....

^ Well, they do say that metabolism slows down as you get older.
