Dietary Laws

I read in Quraan “Eat what is prescribed to the people of the book”. Jews donot eat milk products with meat (red or white), while Muslims eat yogurt with meat and cheese, so what is the correct way of going about this issue?

The exact verse is "The food of the people of the book is lawful onto you and your food is lawful onto them" (5:5). So in this light is yogurt (raita) permitted with beef or chicken (kabaabs)?

Here’s a fatwa that might of interest and use to you, insha’Allah.

Meat from dubious restaurants

Sadiyah, thanks for the info, but it doesn’t answer my question about mixing dairy products with meat.

i know what you mean but it is not that hard. jews have stricter dietary laws, islam relaxes some of those laws but still maintains the basic guidelines. it is like a 5 ft wide box can go through a 10 ft wide hole but a 10 ft wide box cant go through a 5 ft wide hole. islamis laws are more lenient so we r like 10 ft wide hole, jewish laws are 5 ft hole. any food that passes the 5 ft hole definately passes the 10 ft hole, but its not always the case the other way around. do u vaguely understand me?

ThandyMazaq thanks for the reply. I do vaguely understand you however; Does Islam has strict interpretations besides pork and wine on what to mix and not. Because according to leniency that you mention then it would be OK to get meat from the market since Christians are also people of the book, but clearly it is not the case. Thanks for your reply

there are no laws on mixing food. any food that is legal alone, can be mixed with any othe food item that is legal alone as well. unlike judaism where milk and meat cant be mixed.

modern day christians are a different story. i believe that if they recite the name of God while slaughtering, i would eat their meat, but if they dont follow the basic guideline of reciting the name of God i wont. some ppl have said it is legal i am not a schoalr so i dont know what to say of that claim, it can be wrong OR just a difference of opinion that is with in the limits of islamic law. allah o alam.

but islam-qa tells us not to even ask christians where they got their food from and assume it to be legal, not sure if it applies in america too when we know how widespread non religously slaughtered meat is.
