And "khilafah being fard" is held dearly by groups like hizbutahrir, etc.

that is because it is a fard to establish the Shareeah. not 1 muslim country has established the law of Allaah(swt) so for us right now, the Khilifah is a fard.
Insha'Allaah we will live to see it. the "khilafah being fard" is not just held by hizb-ut-tahrir but all True muslims, who know the deen, who know al walaa wal baraa, who know Tawheed, who want democracy out of muslims lands and the legislation for Allaah alone!
Allaah(swt) said in the Qur'aan
"He (Allah) has ordained for you the religion (Islam) which He ordained for Nooh [Noah], and that which We have inspired in you [Muhammad], and that which We ordained for Ibraaheem [Abraham], Moosaa [Moses] and 'Eesaa [Jesus] saying you should establish [implement] the Deen and make no divisions in it. Intolerable for the Mushrikoon, is that to which you call them. Allah chooses for Himself whom He wills, and guides unto Himself who turns to Him in repentance and in obedience. (EMQ ash-Shooraa, 42:13)"
and HE(swt) also said
…And whosoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, such are the kaafiroon (EMQ 5:44); zaalimoon (5:45); faasiqoon (5:47).
Establishing the law of Allaah is a very important principle of Islaam and we should all research into it.

Khilafah is fard, however, whats more important is the development of the ummah itself.
The ummah is declining in Taqwaa of Allah swt, and until that taqwaa is spread and brought into the hearts of the believers, we cannot establish any land or principle .
Establish a base first, so we can stand the structure of islam.
You and I alone cannot implement the law of god, which ofcourse is fard, and that is how i want to live.
But it cannot be done unless the ummah collectively does it.

yeh yr right. that is also my opinion.
The Prophet(saw) said " "My Ummah will not unite upon error." [Reported by at-Tirmidhee and Haakim - Sahih]
so we need to first sort out our aqeedah and unite upon aqeedah and Tawheed 1st and then insha'Allaah the rest will fall in place.
One Shaykh said (cannot rmbr which one) "establish the khilafah in yr heart and watch it estbalish on the earth"
by the way Hizb-ut-tahrir. yes they believe in khilifah but the aqeedah they are upon is not the same as the Ahlus Sunnah!

The whole argument with the HT is chicken and egg syndrome.
All Islamic groups (Sunni ones anyway) agree that Khilafat is fardh. However, most feel that you must first reform society to be truly Islamic in order to create a truly Islamic state.
The HT response is that society cannot be reformed to be truly Islamic apart from within the protective confines of an Islamic state.
My view is that most Islamic groups want to make the people want to be good Muslims and want an Islamic state.
On the other hand, I think that the HT effectively aims to use the Islamic state to force people to be good Muslims.
If you force someone to do something.... they will resent that thing.
