Did anyone have the down’s test? I am a bit reluctant for it. From what i know, you’re injected in your belly button for the test? Okay thats creepy. Then, God forbid if something is wrong what can you do about it? Islam doesn’t allow abortion and you will just be depressed knowing there is something wrong with the baby.
Re: Did anyone have a Down’s syndrome screening test?
You don’t have to do the invasive screening. Around 12 weeks they do an NT scan which involves an ultrasound and maybe some bloodwork, if you choose to have it. No amniocentesis or anything. We decided to do only those very basic screenings to prepare us if there were any problems but mostly bc we enjoy having the u/s.
Re: Did anyone have a Down’s syndrome screening test?
I chose to get the blood test for detection of genetical problems. The scan can only be done on specific time/week as far as I remember (I think sometime between 12 and 13 week may be)
The way I saw it, if God forbid there is some concern, I will be well prepared for it. TBH, the thought of being in depression never came to my mind.
Re: Did anyone have a Down’s syndrome screening test?
Just put your trust in Allah and skip the test. Before I get picked on by fellow women, I’d like to recommend to go through NHS website…amniocentesis is done at around 15 weeks and can cause miscarriage.
Re: Did anyone have a Down’s syndrome screening test?
I did for both my pregnancies. Like Sahar said, you don’t have to do invasive. At 12 weeks they do ultrasound to check abnormalities and blood test. If they find those test positive then the doctor suggest you go for invasive testing. Sometimes its good to be prepared if God forbid you have to take care of a child with special needs.
Re: Did anyone have a Down’s syndrome screening test?
I think everyone agrees that amnio and CVS have risk factors, just like any other invasive test.
But on the other hand, in my opinion, the blood test and the nuchal translucency test don’t have risk factors and do provide some information. Remember, they won’t provide a diagnosis, but more of a risk stratification so if they’re low-risk, that’s great, but if, Allah forbid, it comes back as medium or high risk, that puts the parents in the spot of trying to figure out whether they want to pursue more testing or not.
I think all parents are different. Just like some don’t want to know the sex of the baby and some do, this is a personal decision.
the nuchal translucency ultrasound needs to be done between after 11 weeks and before 14 weeks. I think CVS needs to be done prior to 14 weeks too, so if that is something parents would be interested in pursuing, make sure the nuchal translucency ultrasound is scheduled a bit on the earlier side.
Re: Did anyone have a Down’s syndrome screening test?
The prenatal screening is not for downs only. Some conditions would require the presence of neonatal specialists at birth to deal with the medical conditions and some can even be treated in utero.
I am at 16 weeks and have been told if i want it i should get it right away. What the MW told me was the risk of miscarriage and the invasive screening kind of creeped me out. I think i am going to leave it in Allah’s hands and move on. God forbid there is a problem we cant do anything about it now since we will be continuing with the pregnancy. If God wills that we have a child with special needs, He will get me through it too. I dont want to start getting depreased from now. So probably not going for the test.
Re: Did anyone have a Down’s syndrome screening test?
I second Sahar… They only and only ask the mother to get an invasive procedure done IF and ONlY IF there are already known risks involved, family history etc…
Otherwise,… A regular U/S is done and thats it… Alongwith bloodtest. At 9-12 weeks… Abnormalities will show up here.. You can choose to abort.
And another done at 20 weeks where you can find out the gender… Any abnormalities will show up here too… Though chances of aborting would be close to zilch.
Inshallah all will be well
Were you asked to have an invasive scan done after the regular U/S results or have you not had that done yet?
I haven’t had the ultra sound here as i was out of country. My first scan is scheduled for my 20th week which is the anomaly scan. Like i said, for me there isn’t a point knowing about it i guess because i will be continuing the pregnancy no matter what the case is for us. Murdering a child is not something i can do.
So what ever it may be will go along. In Sha Allah all will be well and i guess the upcoming scan will clarify that.
Re: Did anyone have a Down’s syndrome screening test?
Same here. I was out of country and when I came back, I was already 16 weeks and doctor just said that they’ll do quad scan(I hope thats the right name) which only involved blood work. Now, I’ve my appointment on the 25th. for the U/S. So, we’ll see.
Re: Did anyone have a Down’s syndrome screening test?
You can get the test done around 16 weeks via your MW. The bloods are usually sent off for testing and you wait for the results in the post.
If the chances come up higher than average you are offered further tests, which are more avasive. They do indeed carry a small chance of miscarriage. But that’s only if the bloodtests or scan was to say the baby has high chances of being DS.
In the ultrasound they are basically looking at measuring fluid behind the neck area. It can be impossible-like it was for me as our baby was wriggling.
