Pakistan: The Threat Within

Months of intense protests; lawyers, journalists, professionals…all taking to the streets. Can Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf keep control of his own country? Balancing a fine line is necessary for Musharraf to stay in power, keeping his allies happy in the War on Terror while convincing his people he puts Pakistan first. But where does his heart truly lie? With fighting terrorists or waging a holy war with India? The U.S. and Britain depend on Musharraf and his Army to hunt down the Taliban and Al Qaeda, but is he playing a double game?

CNN’s Nic Robertson travels across the region and discovers that al Qaeda and the Taliban are alive, well and building their base of operations inside Pakistan.

Re: Did anyone else see:CNN: Pakistan the..

Yes. Pretty crap. 1 sided anti Pak diatribe.

Re: Did anyone else see:CNN: Pakistan the..

Taliban im sure are everywhere... Those murdering rat ba$tards can only hide in their holes...
But Pakistan seems to be moving in the right dirfection... The Judiciary is looking stronger, the media is increasingly independant, the opposition parties seem to be getting their sh1t together (minus the few stragglers and two faced turn coats among the lott). Awam has a renewed sense of what Pakistan should be and what it can be, and with the latest attack on fundamentalists it seems Pak might finally realize that courting militants Islamists is counter productive...
All the ingredients for a viable democracy are there, now its only a matter of what Musharaf does next. This is a the best oppurtunity Pakistan has ever had in becoming a true democracy. The extremists such as the Taliban cant stand up in the face of such a development.

Fairly biased. Almost like a paid commercial.

Re: Did anyone else see:CNN: Pakistan the..

I saw it on Sunday. Pretty biased, actually. However, given the weak kneed govt response to jihadis and Taliban before yesterday, we should not be surprised to see such views.

It is a fact that jahils from Tunisia to Tanzania are caught from Pakistan and claim to attend “training camps.” And our govt response varies from denial to credit. “We deny that there are training camps” - “Yes, we bombed a training camp in Waziristan” - “No there are no training camps” - “Madrassas have nothing to do with terrorism” - “70 terrorists killed in madrassa attack” etc.

Heck when heavily armed foreign jihadis can be holed out half mile from ISI HQ, we cannot credibly refute such views. Until our GHQ and Agencies can realize that in today’s world, you cannot hide facts for long and understand that jihadis are a threat to their trainers as well as targets, we will continue to see such portrayals of Pakistan. I hope the Lal Masjid events lead to a new beginning.
