Did any experiments of your own?

As a kid or even now? :halo: My favourite one when I was a kid was using baking soda and putting that in vinegar to make a volcano eruption :@:

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

Does fooling around in lab practicals count as experiments of your own? :chilly: coz I’ve done many, such as pouring organic solvents down the sink just to see what happens!

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

lol of course it counts as experiments :cb:.. so what happened then? :hmmm:

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

A LOT of tap water was wasted! :@: I had to let the tap run for a good half an hour to get rid of the stink and to dilute the solvent .... I'm protective of the environment, you see! :P

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

lmao half an hour! what about all the water u wasted madam? :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

Next time I get my hands on diet coke and mentos, this is what I’m going to do!

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

my fav experiment is .... mentos + pepsi ..... :@:

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

^ copy cat!

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

u copied me .. :cryb:

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

other then that ..my fav exp was making ..alkaline ... thats mixing potassium carbonate in water

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

LOOOL wth!!! okay miss science now tell me why that happened!?

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

also i used to love making soaps...hehe

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

DW, its all to do with the trapped CO2 in coke and the various "bumps" (uneven surface) of mentos. Carbon dioxide is released from the drink as we open the bottle but the process is wayyy faster in the presence of mentos because of the various "nucleation" sites present on mentos.... CO2 is attracted to these sites, lots & lots of bubbles form, and CO2 escapes violently.

It works better with diet coke because its less sticky... and the surface of mentos sweets must be rough, not smooth.

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

Oh coool!! I am gonna try doing that at home :omg: I hope my mum doesn’t freak out or something :omg:

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

^ Try it in the back garden or something…I did it in my local park
I even tried the “upside down” version…as soon as I put the mentos in I closed the cap and shook the bottle. Then I opened the cap a tiny bit and threw the bottle on the floor…it was like a rocket. I did this in an open area though…I seriously wouldn’t recommend doing this near anyone’s house :hehe:

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

OMG how cool lol! I am so surprised I had no idea about this mentos experiment lol... you guys got any more cool ones? :P

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

I used to burn paper using mirror and sunlight.

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

Something I shouldn’t have done when I was younger…I made a flamethrower using a spray deodorant and a lighter. That was pretty dangerous…I was lucky I didn’t burn myself. I’m such a pyromaniac :hinna:

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

That reminds me of Cascada's new song lol!

Re: Did any experiments of your own?

o gosh i have done tons, right up to university.
The best one was experimenting with a supersonic wind tunnel,

in my thesis i was left alone to study turbulence in a wind tunnel.

my favourite was in A level. mix water and ethanol together. but these two mixtures are in-miscible so the ethanol will sit on the top of water. Next get a tie or £10 notes and dip it into this mixture. the tie will appear to burn, but will not burn the tie. basically the ethanol on top is flammable so lights up, but once that is burnt, water remains, which will put out the fire and the money or tie will not burn.
