I had both DSL & Dial up connections…Dial up came free with AOL when i bought my new lap top…so i didn’t bother to renew my account for DSL…Now when my telephone bill came up…it was 601.00$$…a lot…I called my phone company they told me i may be using a phone connection for Dial up that is not in my zone…they charged me for computer related calls for 535.00 Dollars…I told them this is insane…& i want my bill down to the average that i was paying before(90 $$ a month)…They didn’t listen to me…took 200$ off & decreased it upto 401.00$$ only…
Any suggestions from anyone…They looted me & they are not agreeing on that…I was only using the local numbers for my computers…by the way i m in USA & not in Canada…

you may contact BBB, Attorney General of your city/state to see if they can help (usually they do).

Format your pc, it wont happen again.
Some automatic dialers have been installed on your pc through some virus. After you format, visit secure website and have a good firewall and anti virus.
You’re lucky they reduced it. Here, they never do. Since the customer’s telephone line dials these overseas ISPs to connect by itself, your actual provider has nothing to do with that. It is just like making international calls.

Yeah right..But then where have you ever heard ofpaying 400$$ for one months computer related phone bills…where it’s supposed to be free…They themselves realised that but they told me,we have already shown our good will…& we won’t do anything else…
I am now just thinking to close this free Dial up with AOL…& would continue on my old DSL…

For Attorney General, you'll have to check out the website of your cit/state, or may even try google-ing it.

Depends on how many times your computer dialed out and for how long duration. Did you check the details on your phone bill? Dont you see some strange countries’ numbers dialed? Did you make those calls? You didnt, right? So it was your pc. Your actual ISP has nothing to do with who used your line, you or your pc. It’s the same thing for them.
So, format your pc.

TNWB, you can't really say if he has virus or so, very likely the dialup software provided by AOL gave him options to select a number from "surrounding" cities which may be outside his "local" area therefore being charged "per minute" of connection.

I have a lot of out station calls(that i am not sure off) on the bill ...they are outside the city but with in the USA....My call plan if i am not wrong charges me 0.05$ for every minute outside the city...but that is nothing ....even if i make 100 calls outside city,my bill usually comes out around 8-10$ for these calls..how come 400$$?...If it is virus related installed numbers...then why i should be blamed & be charged this much..i mean i did nothing wrong..they should be courteous enough & take these charges off...i mean i am being robbed for a thing that was not in my hands...& some stupid person was spreading this virus.....

^ I know...its been only for last one month...i was trying to save my 35$ every month with Verizon(Besides i don't do any heavy stuff on net,that would require much speed)...Thought 6 months of free AOL would save me 210 $$...But yahan tou lenaay kay denaay parr gaye :(.......

That’s what i did…talked to their Supervisor…& that’s what she did…waive off 200$$(Initially bill was 601.00$$)…Now it is 401.00$$…due to that stupid computer related connections…??

does your bill give you details of which number you called and for how long and how much they charging you..
if its local # then they should not charge you..
