I have been diagnosed with type1 diabetese couple of days ago and the biggest worry is to maintain balanced diet… I am getting different advice from everyone as to what to eat for instance the Doctors have told me I can have boiled potatos, boiled rice and wholewheat roti and all that and people who are already having that problem telling me to run miles away from these things… My question is how should I count my carbs for breakfast, lunch and dinner? What are the best fruits and if sweetners can be used in my cereals… Also can I have corn flakes once in a while? I havnt had an appointment with a dietitian yet and the doctors are nt giving me as much information regarding my diet which is completely freaking me out as I dnt knw if I am eating the right thing for my blood sugar to become normal…
I would really appreciate it if you guys have a diet plan for my problem
Hi, there was a similar thread some time ago.. found the link for you. I am in a bit of a hurry.. will try to get back inshAllah with more. Here it is.
Also, it's better if you talk to your doctor and a nutritionist to explain it to you in a better way.. Like not just tell you what to eat and what not to eat but also tell you the reason to avoid or to have certain food items. Will make it easier for you to make the correct choices for yourself.
Aminas, just to let you know , diabetes is not really an illness in the first few years , its merely living a life in a certain discipline... all you got to do is keep the following in mind :
eat regularly at short intervals .. for example every four hours .. never give huge gaps between two meal times ..
eat in smaller portions .. a surge of calorie is difficult for the body to handle , even though you may have eaten a heavy meal your body will still ask for some amount of calorie to keep the insulin in the body regulated ... so might as well take small portions and eat more frequently ..
Dont starve yourself of any fruits and veg .. you can have most of the things you want .. just start keeping a tab of the calorie count .. for example a roti v/s a piece of mathai ... that tiny piece of sweet might have much more calories than a roti ... so its not about the size but about the calorie count
when you see your doctor , just try to find out what calorie amount you can consume .. after that design your own meal plans trying to live upto that calorie count ...
You will get the best answers from a diabetic nurse, diabetes educator or a dietitian. They will be able to talk to you about your medication - in your case insulin and which type you are on. Depending on the type of insulin you may or may not need to eat snacks. They will also tell you how to do carbohydrate counting and how many carbohydrate units you are allowed to eat at each meal. Check out the following link with some excellent tools by Canadian Diabetes Association: Just the Basics.

Good luck and hope it all becomes easy for you ..
CB, its not just about total calories but where those calories come from eg. carb or protein source.
