I observed Lungi or Dhooti is common in South Indian,Punjabi and Bihari culture… Grooms in South Indian culture wear it on wedding day… In Pakistani Punjabi moives… heroins also wear…
What is the origin of it? Is it popular in upper class too? Is Dhooti going to obsolete or popular in next few decades? What is your general thinking about it?
in the 70's i think, pure silk dhoti and pure silk kurtaa [expensive stuff] was popular among Bollywood movers and shakers. a lot of producers, directors, musicians and big guns wore them but NOT by actors/actresses.

it tells a lot about how the dhoti is worn and also there is a difference between a dhoti and a lungi.
Muslims and South Indians wear lungis … Madrasis fold their lungi from the knees up. Hindus usually tuck the end part at the waist [called LAAM] while women don’t tuck it up…but…Maharashtrian women do tuck their dhoti like men in UP.
whenever the dhoti is untucked, it trails behind like a train…log haNs ke kahte ahiN…“dekho iskii LAAM laTak rahii hai”… laam is like the man’s tail is dragging along
Amongs the dresses as per Hindu culture, the clothes like dhotī-uparṇē, dhoti-kurtā, kurta-pyjāmā, silk dhoti, gamachha etc. are the appropriate and sāttvik dresses. According to the religious scriptures it is appropriate for men to wear dhoti-kurta everyday and a silkdhoti, that is, kaushey-uparne while performing a religious ritual and during festivals. Some people wear kurta*-pyjama* as it is not possible for them to wear a dhoti.A dhoti, an uncut dress for men, prescribed by Hindu culture has been prevalent since ancient times.
A dhoti is sattvik because it is specially worn by the Deities. For this reason the benefit of sāttviktā available from wearing a dhoti is higher in comparison with other clothes.
