MS Dhoni, India’s captain, has been banned for the Adelaide Test after India were found to be two overs short of the required over-rate in Perth.
In Dhoni’s absence, Virender Sehwag will captain the side in Adelaide. Wriddhiman Saha, who debuted in Nagpur as a specialist batsman in unusual circumstances against South Africa in 2009-10, is the reserve wicketkeeper on tour.
India sent down 76 overs in 362 minutes in the only innings they bowled in at the WACA ground. There were allowances made for the 10 wickets they took and other interruptions for movement behind sight screen and injury timeouts, but India were still found short.
Dhoni pleaded guilty, and said he was aware of the regulations. He was fined 40% of his match fees, and the rest of the team was docked 20% each. This was India’s second over-rate offence in the last 12 months. Dhoni had been on notice after India were found short in Barbados in June-July last year.
Although Dhoni should be penalized because its the rule but I think rule is a bit harsh its-self. Just 2 over behind and u get a ban. 5-6 overs, I understand. Having said that, Dhoni is a serial offender. I think he did the same in ODIs too. Why does he always have problem in keeping eyes on over rate!
This time he does not have Sreesanth to kick around.
I hear Parthiv Patel is a good keeper batsman. How come they did not take a genuine keepr batsman as back-up. Though Dhoni's fishing outside the off-stump style of batting does not actually qualify him to be a keeper-batsman.
Why is Sehwag the captain - he needs to earn his place in the team. Even if Sehwag is vice captain, they should give captaincy to Gambhir. Throw the bums out.
This is one rule in cricket that I don't necessarily agree with, a captain being banned for future games because of a slow over rate. He may not always be responsible (the bowlers must also share the blame) There should be some other punishment for this IMO. What you do in game A should have no bearing on game B or subsequent games
Similarly I do not agree with the soccer rule whereby if a player is cautioned twice (i.e. second yellow card) in the same match he is not only sent off but also forced to miss the next game or two ... absolutely rubbish rule IMO. The punishment should be confined to that particular game
[QUOTE] Soccer: A player would get a yellow card (a warning) if they swear, play rough, dive dangerously (these sort of things). Getting two yellow cards in the same game would get a player sent off the field for the rest of the match, and they would miss the next match. If a player gets two yellow cards in a tournament (but not in the same match), he would miss the game following the match he gets the second yellow card.
If a player plays dangerously, swears at another player, (or referee) attacks another player (these sorts of things) they would get a red card. If a player gets a red card, they are sent off for the rest of the game, and depending on how bad the assault, they would miss either one or two matches following.

you'd see a lot of yellow cards in last 5 minutes of the game, then.
