I don’t see lack of knowledge, but excess of ego leads to such act.

When such attitude is largely accepted by a society and people don’t raise voice against such things or afraid to say something openly on these issues, its definitely lack of knowledge. Knowledge about how to deal with and tolerate difference of opinion.
