I believe in both. Like someone said Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it.

Yaar, Pinky, what is up with these questions of yours where you ask put forth two options and often times it's a combination of the two is the answer.
I forget who said it (maybe Hazrat Ali RA?)...that in the failure of my plans did I recognize the existence of God. I believe that while some things are predestined, Allah has given us a plenty of free will. You try your best to do what your can, and you also try your best (and it can be easier said than done) to have faith in Allah. Sometimes, it isn't until much much later down the road, that you realize there was some good in a hardship or the a dua not being fulfilled the way you had wanted it to be....(and I'll confess that this 'lil bit can be hard to admit even to yourself).
