Koeksisters are a bit crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. At a bakery-cafe in Cape Town, a baker told me that the secret to this is to chill the sugar syrup and get it as cold as possible and dip the koeksisters into it as quickly as possible after frying.
On a similar note, other South African desserts:

Traditionally, Sugar and Milk was the typical meetha in Sindhi cuture or I may say that in rural culture of sub-continent.
I was listening to this song by Abida Parveen penned by Shah Latif. This relates to story of Umar Marvi. Marvi was a poor girl from a village Malir in Thar and when she was abducted by the then ruler Umar Soomro, she kept on remembering her people, land, its seasons specially rainy days and then she rejects the delicious cuisine of the palace over the food that was consumed by her people (Maroo)
Muhnjo mulk malir- Abida Perween - YouTube](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjEft5aj6oI)She mentions ‘Makhan Maakhi’ and ‘Khand Kheer - Sughar and Milk’ as the food which is dear to her people.

So I was right when I said 5 years back that this boring Sooji Halwa is almost present in all cultures.
Last January, I visited Turkey (one day in transit) and we were taken on free tour by Turkish Airline, which also included free lunch at a restaurant near Blue Mosque, Instanbul. There they served us with same Sooji Halwa. A Brazilian guy was also in our group and he liked it and asked ‘how this is made’. I told him its simple and even I can make it. This was confirmed by a Macedonian lady in our group, who said that they also made this in their home. lols.
so this thread was reactivated by someone who promoted his / her youtube channel.
Interesting!
Halwa is universal
availiable in all culture
I am a meetha person but my dessert shouldn’t be too sweet. I don’t really prefer pakistani desseets tbh except for ras malayee and motichoor laddoos.
My faves are cheesecakes (ny style/blueberry only), muhallabia (lebanese specifically) and most european layer cakes.
American desserts are poison, if I must add.
