A while back I was thinking about how some cultures are quite keen on dessert and have loads of desserts, while others don’t have as many dessert dishes. That rather got me thinking about desserts in various cultures.
What are some common dessert dishes in the different cultures? Do you have a favourite dessert in your culture?
A few desserts/sweets in my culture are:
Asabia-el-aroos (“brides’ fingers") – Thin fingers made from crisp phyllo pastry which are stuffed with nuts and sugar (and sometimes cream) and are glazed, baked, and dipped in orange syrup before serving.
Awb-e-dundawn (roughly “melt in your mouth") – Crumbly rosewater and cardamom biscuits with loads a butter.
Gosh-e-feel (“elephants’ ears”) – Thin pastries which are fried and dusted with sugar, cardamom and ground pistachios.
Kishmish paneer – Soft cheese served with black raisins, sultanas, nuts and fresh fruit.
Kulche Badami – Almond biscuits with a cracked surface, which are crunchy on the outside but chewy on the inside, a bit like a meringue.
Kulche Birinjee – Delicate butter biscuits made from finely ground rice flour.
Nuqul-e-badami – Sugar covered almonds with a touch of cardamom.
Sheer Payra – A fudge-like sweet made from milk and topped with cardamom and pistachios.
From my own culture, I love kulfi. From the milky desserts, I like ras malai and savaiyyan. Out of the mithais, I like gulab jamun and galebi and the barfi made in Pakistan.
As for desserts from other cultures....these days I'm craving flan. I like its lightness in texture.
As for desserts I wanna try....I have this dream of trying a variety of French pastries. They are hide to find in my diversity-deprived state...or rather city. And the weird thing is that I saw these French pastries in the malls when I visited Dubai last time...staring me in the face...and yet I didn't have any. No clue why I didn't. Instead I went straight to the Haagen Dasz for a scoop of Belgian chocolate, which is my favorite ice cream...and which I've had many a time before. Strange how things turned out, lol

That is my absolute favourite! I don't like v.sweet deserts but I LOVE cold ras malai..
In Bangladesh ras gulla is more popular (round more spongy version and sweeter) but I don't really like it..
Rasaaval [rice cooked in sugarcane syrup topped, contains resins, coconut tidbits, and chironjii]…it’s eaten with milk, simmering overnight on low heat (on coal bed)] and malaaii
