Umm, so I cant change my desktop background anymore. You know how you can right-click and go to properties to change your background, well, I dont have the desktop background tab anymore. And when I went to the control panel I dont have the appearances and themes option anymore either.
So what the hell is wrong with my computer and does anybody know to fix it?
Oh also, you know the cd/dvd thingie, what is called a drive? i mean where you put them, well that wont open. It’s been like that for while. You know there is no light in it anymore. And I dont know how I coulda broke it :S
If you don't know what a CD/DVD drive is called I would suggest not to manually edit the registry. Install TweakUI and do everything thru that.
Another question, is this a home or a corporate computer? If its corporate this may be getting done thru group policy that the IT dept sets up. So you may be going against policy.
You can setup desktop background just by right clicking on the image and Set as Desktop Background.
If there's no light it means you need to call the vendor OR If a CD/DVD stuck in the drive then get a paper clip and straighten it out then stick into the little hole in the front of the CD/DVD Drive then gently push the clip in until the door opens.
You can use TweakUI as Baba and teggy mentioned.
tofi - no, its my own laptop. I dont even know when this happened. My sis mentioned it to me cuz she was tryna change my background. what is tweakui?
wiseguy - would the paperclip trick work even if there's no light? oh and i have already tried right-clicking and changing the background. The option is there but the background doesnt change :-/
App kay ghar main hatora hay ? Agar hay to dow ,teen lagaeen.
Dosree tarkeeb yeh hay kah kisi bus key nechay rakh dain.
Just kidding. So for you have got good advice. But looks like a malware/spyware attack since your younger sis discovered it so there is no option other than registry edit. Here is how you can do it. But registry edit is risky if done by a novice.
Run “Regedit”.
Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\policies
If you see a folder (key) “ActiveDesktop” select it. If not, make a new key and label it “ActiveDesktop”.
If you see “NoChangingWallPaper”, double-click the DWORD value and set it to “0”. Otherwise, you need to create a new DWORD value of “NoChangingWallPaper” and set it to “0”.
Try changing your wallpaper. If this fix doesn’t solve the problem, you may also need to make the above registry changes at location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies .
Yea it will work even if PC is turned off. :)
I agree don't play with registry if you don't know what you are doing? Ask someone who knows it. Otherwise you may end up reinstalling Windows.

noo thats not what i mean. Even when the computer is on the light in the cd/dvd drive is not on. I think it's broken.
To see that your computer actually recognizes that CD/DVD is attached, do the following:
Right-Click MY COMPUTER and go down the list and click on Properties
Then click on HARDWARE TAB, next click on Device Manager shown in the window.
This is where all components of your computer are listed.
Go to DVD/CD ROM DRIVES
click it just once, it will expand and you Should see your CD/DVD (for example: Mine's Pioneer so it shows under that) If it is there...next u want to double-click that and in the window it should say the device is working properly. Now...if all that is present and well...u can proceed and try a few other things...
For your ROM drive (CD/DVD), you might have to open up the side panel of ur PC and recheck the cable going from CD/DVD to the motherboard, make sure it's not loose or anything. Also check the power connector, make sure it's connected.
You may also wanna try a different IDE Cable (the wide thin cable that connects you CD/DVD to motherboard, sometimes they become defective.
that means ur IDE cable is either damaged or not working properly.
First try to readjust the cable make sure it's plugged in properly. its the Thin flat cable that goes from your motherboard to the back of ur CD/DVD Drive....
And then check again...if it still doesn't show then the cheapest option would to replace the cable. More than often it's the cable.
As a last resort you might have to replace the drive altogether. They sell pretty cheap nowadays. ($15-$20).
