Designer Culture

I was reading ET and found this interesting news on Peshawari Chappal.

Paul Smith, Western brand, is selling Rs. 3000 Peshawari Chappal in Rs. 60,000. ($ 595)

That is just one example. Are Pakistani brand conscious? Would you prefer designer name over local brand? Why is designer culture booming among Pakistanis?

Re: Designer Culture

show off. I would go for any local brand (which got quality) over any foreign brand.

Re: Designer Culture

Money can’t buy you style and everything that glitters are not gold.

Stylish people are usually smart buyers and smart buyers are often too discerning to buy labelled stuff for sake of – quality, value for money, style all come into the question.

As far as Pakistani fashion is concerned, I definitely prefer local traditional crafts and handiwork over labelled boutique and designer stuff for style and ethical reasons.

Re: Designer Culture

Question: How many of us are smart buyers?

Re: Designer Culture

I think I am.

I am very confident about my taste, style, personality and the things I can pull off - so that saves me from being an impulsive buyer or buying things or wearing clothes things for sake of impressing others. If you focus on quality, you can usually tell whether the item worth the price tag or not.

Re: Designer Culture

Why are desi brand conscious?

Re: Designer Culture

I don't know, growing up I don't remember Pakistani women around me paying any attention to designer labels. Seems like there's a drastic change in people's attitude towards fashion and style.

Re: Designer Culture

I think loads of people simply buy designer items for the designer tag and for the sake of impressing others. I think this is especially true with clothing, particularly Pakistani bridal designers.

I quite agree with Jolie that money doesn’t necessarily reflect style or even quality for that matter. Rather than whether or not an article of clothing has a designer tag, I think the primary factor should be the quality and whether or not it actually looks good on you. I’ve seen loads of people wear things that are terribly unflattering on them and do not suit them in the slightest simply because of the designer tag. :cb:

Re: Designer Culture

But designer stuff is fine in quality. Some designs speak by themselves. :hmmm:

Re: Designer Culture

^Yes, but how a garment looks on a specific person is not solely dependent on the quality. Many designers have a specific design aesthetic, or rather a specific style, which is unique to them and which they are primarily known for.

The specific design aesthetic and style of a particular designer may not necessarily suit everyone and if something doesn't suit a person, it can opaque the quality of the garment and make it look rather ordinary or even of lesser quality. For example, at a Pakistani wedding I attended a couple of weeks ago, the bride was wearing a designer outfit from a rather well known designer specifically known for her bridal wear. However, the style of the outfit did not suit or fit the bride particularly well in that it was way too much fabric and too heavy for the bride's 5'0 frame. As a result, the top part looked rather crumpled and the skirt looked creased and quite wrinkled, making the fabric and the quality look not very good. If it was not for the bride's rather ostentatious mother going on about how the outfit was a Bunto and telling all and sundry, most people would have simply assumed that it was a rather ordinary, unremarkable outfit of average quality.

Also, the fact that so many people have well known designer outfits replicated, often with not very good quality materials, makes me think that they are not terribly concerned about the quality that a particular designer may offer but rather the "designer tag" (even if it is fake).
