Desi totkas - tried and tested

OK believe me, I have done these with great results:

For colic/indigestion in kids or adults:
Boil a teaspoon of ajwain in a cup of water until it is reduced to half the quantity. Cool and give a teaspoonful every few hours.

For nasal/chest congestion:
Take a white onion. Grate it or chop it. Add rock sugar (misri). Leave for a few minutes till water is released from onion. Squeeze out the water and drink it.

For a tickle in the throat, a sore throat:
Boil a cup of milk with a teaspoon of turmeric (haldi). Add a spoon of honey and drink it up.

For coughs:
Salt & warm water gargles
A tablespoon of honey with cracked black pepper

Please add on and share your magic totkas!

Re: Desi totkas - tried and tested

Ear ache...fry garlic in oil, let the oil cool down and put drops in your ear...smells disgusting..but promise it works.
Also, for sore throats or cough...warm water with baking soda....then take the back of your toothbrush and apply a small quantity of glycerine at the back of the throat....works like magic.

For constipation, peel an orange with the white fiber-y mesh still on it. Eat once a day for a few days, and you'll be the 'king of the throne' in no time..!

Secret? The white thread like mesh between the skin and the orange is pure fiber without some of the complexities found in other fruits and vegetables with fiber. It is excellent for constipation and is a delicious, easy way for a regular, natural cycle.

These are neat!

Re: Desi totkas - tried and tested

For kids that are throwing up/feel nauseous
peel/slice onion in half. Stick 3-4 "loang" (cloves) into the onion. Place in a about 1/12 cup of water and bring to a few boils. Add maybe a touch of salt. Obviously this isnt delicious, but it worked wonders with my son after i got him to drink it. He stopped throwing up.

For nasal/chest congestion:
Take a white onion. Grate it or chop it. Add rock sugar (misri). Leave for a few minutes till water is released from onion. Squeeze out the water and drink it.

Interesting. I do something similar. Just chop up some onion & add honey. Then drink the liquid that comes out. Its gross but it helps.

Re: Desi totkas - tried and tested

Interesting.

Though some of these sound yukky, they actually work!

Re: Desi totkas - tried and tested

I dont really get this one ... wat do we do with the warm water with baking soda???

and/or take the back of the brush ..... back of the throat. thats the second totka??

confused :(

I have not been able to get Glycrine here in USA. Do you guys know where can I find it or any alternitives.

Re: Desi totkas - tried and tested

^^ get it from the pharmacy

It’s available every where. Most of the time comes in a brown bottle if I am not wrong.

I checked my local CVS and Ralphs etc but couldn't find it. Even talked to the pharmasist but no luck. May be I will go check wallgreens or walmart.
I did found glycrnie in CVS but it was for rectal use only.

For babies:

Relief from Gas/Colic stomach pains: Make a paste of aseofotedia (hing) and little warm water. Rub in wide circular motion around the belly button area. Foul smelling but works. For adults, drink this mixture.

Cold/congestion: Boil saffron in little milk till milk sightly thickens. Rub this paste on chest, back, nose and forehead to relieve congestion. Also give milk boiled with saffron

Re: Desi totkas - tried and tested

a very nice thread, Niksik. amazing tips.
thanks. one i would like to share is, and that also is good for children and adults, if someone has eaten a very hot and spicy dish, quickly drink some cold milk. it will neutralize the effect of spiciness on the tastebuds.

Re: Desi totkas - tried and tested

^I would like to add to what Dushwari wrote.
If milk doesn't help then have a piece of bread. (read this in a book)

Re: Desi totkas - tried and tested

Question for all totkay-induced khawateen - what are the benefits of taking warm honey as oppose to taking it without warming? Is it easily digested or more nutritious or is honey in it's pure form without the heat more beneficial for the body?

Re: Desi totkas - tried and tested

I think it goes down the throat smoother.

Re: Desi totkas - tried and tested

I can confirm the milk/turmeric and honey with black pepper one..tried and tested...

As for the onion and misri, do you have to add the misri to the onion water or add before onion releases water?

Good job, keep them coming!

Re: Desi totkas - tried and tested

Add misri soon after you chop the onion to help release the water.
