I’m curious to find out the preference of other guppies in terms of desi/non-desi neighbourhoods. Ie. the kind of neighbourhood you’re currently in and if you’d like to move to a different area and possibly the reasons for it.
All this time we lived in a non-desi neighbourhood. We had rishtaydaar and other desis lamenting how non-desi areas are dull and boring. Supposedly, there’s not much tafreeh and how neighbours it’s just not as much fun as it is in desi neighbourhoods.
Anyway, just a few weeks ago we moved into a neighbourhood that is mainly comprised of South Asians (not because of what others had to say, but because of a number of other factors that we found attractive). Now some of our rishtaydaar and other desi families are lamenting how desis try to run away from desi neighbourhoods and prefer to live in a non-desi neighbourhood. Not that any of it matters to me or my family, but it’s interesting to notice how people are never happy no matter what state they may be in.
I, so far find is alright, except for the fact that when my sister and I go out for walks, we have people staring at us (desi habit), but other than that the area so far seems great.
ps. Mods, please feel free to move this thread to another forum. I couldn’t figure out where it would fit the best.
hehe yesh Sadiyah.. ppl are never happy .. its just another reality... anyways.. we live in desi area.. ahem north brampton.. and major reason is my mom.. she will be alienated (SP?) if we lived in non-desi area :)
since i am at work 8hours a day and then other activities.. i really don't knw my neighbours that much.. so its all good by my standards :)
my dad thinks desis are backstabbers and jealous breed. we used to live in edison NJ, but we moved. I was happy though for a different reason. The neighborhood used to stink of curry....
In Saudi, we lived in a predominantly American compound.
In London, in a mainly white suburb.
In Toronto, I seem to live in a mainly chapta area.
The thing is, after all this time... I think I would find it odd to move into a mainly desi area. And all this despite the fact that I love going back to Pakistan and feel that I'm at home amongst my own people there....
Always lived in non-desi areas, and for the first time now my parents live in a semi-desi area. It's nice to have iftaari trays arriving during ramzaan and running next door if you're out of tomatoes. :)
Always lived in and non desi environment and would just love the sight of "beautiful desis" walking around or going for walks .....[no Sadiya I would not be starring I would be bedazzaled..]a novelty… the thought of urdu or punjabi...on their lips sounds poetry….
I’d lived in non-desi areas al my life and I don’t think i could ever get used to livign with a bunch of desis. I go down to Brooklyn andjackson hts once in a while but that’s about it. From the stories i been told by my friends who live there… desi areas seem like mini-Pakistans, complete with the staring and kuttay guys :yukh: From what I’ve learned about desis, I don’t ever want to live among them. Family n stuff is fine, but not in a desi neighborhood; I don’t need tubby lardy aunties wiht no life gossiping about how fat i am or how their kids are better htan my kids blah blah blah.
i used to live in a greek/italian neighbourhood... then moved to a very multicultural area (new migrants were moving there cus houses and land were cheaper).. then after a decade we moved to another area which was predominantly occupied by asians (south east asians) and sri lankans... now we're in a umm i dunno another multi-cultural area.. a lot of indians are pakistanis here but mainly because our local mosque is a 5min drive
in a multi cultural neighbourhood. but we are happy cz they are all friendly and broadminded. we’ve been living in the same area for the past 20 years. many neighbours have come and gone. ethnicities include egyptions, chinese, japanese, pakistanis, jordanians, iranians, indians, etc.
this teella chinese guy used to fancy me trying to impress with his red sports car when i was in school. when i paid no attention (he was reeeally “TEELLA” ), he colored his head ORANGE!!! bursting into laughter
he used to come downstairs to watch us swift on our roller blades and… sigh, LOL
