Desi kids stories

What are some of the desi stories that you remember from your childhood? any specific storybook? I am looking for story books for age 3 - 10

Re: Desi kids stories

I used to have these green books - very well illustrated but they had short stories

"angoor katay hain"

"lalchi lomari"

I am sure you can find them in a book store in pakistan

Re: Desi kids stories

I used to buy these one rupee wali choti kahaniyon ki kitabein, read a lot of those so don't remember the names though. Around the age 9-10, I was reading Umroo ayyar and Inspector Jamshed series (by Ashfaq Ahmed).

Re: Desi kids stories

^^Just a week ago I was asking the husband if he remembered the cassette kahanis…
I was surprised to know that he never knew what they were…

I remember my cassette kahanis so well…esp the poodna poodni one…hehehe…
they never lost their charm even when I had heard them like so many times…

I also remember those green books as NJ mentioned…I used to have lots of them…I think they were published by Ferozsons ..

Re: Desi kids stories

The Kids Stories to be simple in Subject and very short in Length. The narration should be attractive and stright with simple words to be understand by the all age groups in children.

Re: Desi kids stories

I remember the story about this crane with a long beak who could have soup from a long bottle but not from a flat plate…don’t remember much,

Re: Desi kids stories

Inspector jamshed series is written by Ishtiaq Ahmed
And yes those green books are published by feroz sons. I read all of those books and then a lot many other, as a child. I used to have a proper library and even started lending books to other kids around, “issuing” them membership cards and what not.

I loved monthly “ankh macholi” which was published from Karachi. It was my favourite one. Other than that we used to read naunehal, taleem-o-tarbiyat, phool, noor, bachon ki dunya etc…

Re: Desi kids stories

Babloo bhai ka basta, Urdu ki Aakhri kitab, all the ferozsons murder mystery type books. There was also this red cover book with a lion on it and multiple stories inside. Don’t remember the name. It’s also ferozsons book.

Re: Desi kids stories

I used to read all of these too! They were such a favorite and I remember waiting for them eagerly at the start of each month.Good times!
I wonder if they still have these for kids.

Re: Desi kids stories

Unfortunately ankh macholi is no longer published. :frowning:
However i have monthly subscription for taleem-o-tarbiyat and occasionally buy naunehal too, for my kids.

I often recall stories by Saeed Lakht. They were a treat to read. There was one story named “nani takho” and it was such a funny one! I still enjoy it.
